Hi Roman, haven't bought one yet (still not 100% convinced if i need it) but from what owners tell the KatzEye is usable up to aperture 11 or even more, especially with the OptiBrite treatment. Maybe some katzeye owners here on the list can confirm tah .. How catz eye focusing screen works with apertures slower than 4 - 5.6? From my earlier experience with non-pentax bodies and AF-screen with microprisms it's not so good on apertures 5.6 and slower. In fact - it may be useless or disturbing and given that some good DA series lenses I own are f/4.0 or f4.0-6.3, I'd rather hear your practical opinion before I decide to change my installed K20D AF-screen for katz eye. barbequeueing recipes on the PDML ^^ I can imagine that this Ale adds a nice flavor to the meat, something i'll try for sure. I use to do my ribs rather similar (with little differences in the used spices) but at lower temperature (between 100-110°C, 4-6 hours) .. with this low and slow method they get very juicy and the meat really falls off the bone .. thanks for sharing, and greetings from germany Andreas I've been barbeduing ribs for forty years. And that's how long it's taken me to perfect the process. You have to start with good meat. Baby back ribs are my choice, but they have to be about an inch thick with long bones. Don't accept ribs with huge hunks of meat hanging on short bones.They're from the end of the cut The night before you're going to cook, cut the slabs in half and pull the membrane off the back. Then rub them with plenty of salt, garlic powder, onion powder and pepper. You can't overdue this, because most of it will wash off anyway. I use Lawry's seasoned salt in place of regular salt. Put the half slabs in aluminum baking pans that are about nine inches square, cover and refrigerate overnight. You can get two half slabs in each pan. Postion them so that the meathy side is on top, and their arcing above the pan. Next day, add about an inch of a good ale to each pan. I use Dogfish Head IPA, probably overkill. If you're making two slabs, you'll need four bottles of beer for the ribs. That leaves two for the cook, which is the correct, before-dinner amount. Now I know this is herietical, but I use a gas barbecue. That's for control. However, I plank the grille with cedar, so it's essentially a smoker. . I use the same cedar planks that I've previously used to grille fish or chicken. They're partly charred but still good for this purpose. I use enough planks to cover any part of the grille where my pans will rest. I place the pans, full of ribs and beer atop the planks and use enough heat under the planks to get the temperature to about 275 F and keep it there. That will cause the wood to smoke very nicely. I cook the ribs at this temperature for three hours. I turn them once for about 45 minutes to let the topside soak up some beer, while washing off -- and soaking in -- some of the seasoning.. After three hours, I remove the pans and th wood, then I put the ribs back on the grille and coat them with Sweet Baby Ray's Bone-Suckin' Barbecue Sauce. I turn the heat up to about 400 and cook the ribs for about 20 minutes, flopping them at least a few times and adding more sauce each time. that leaves them with a nice glaze of carmelized sauce. Serve them with coleslaw and corn on the cob. And another six pack of Dogfish Head. Heaven. back- or frontfocus?
hi, i recently followed a discussion in my favorite forum (bulletin board?) where a guy who had bought a DA 35/2.8 Limited was very disappointed because he found the *lens* to have severe back focus on his K10D while on his K20D it seemed to work just fine. As far as i understand it (with my limited optical knowledge), a lens can (and does) produce various forms ob optical aberrations, but if the virtual image is not directly on the sensor but in front or behind, then it's simply not properly focused, isn't it?! So the AF of the camera would be to blame for not acting accurate or, as second possibility, sensor, AF sensor and/or focusing screen are not leveled. I was asking if someone with a deeper understanding of the optics could confirm or denial this, but no one was able (or wanted) to, thats why I'm asking here now :-) The reason why I'm so interested in this is: a increasing number of ppl in that forum now test their newly bought lenses with a printed test chart under more or less undefined light conditions, of course they find some back- or front focus (of you look hard enough you surely find something to worry about, I'm 100% convinced), and then they send their lenses back, open new threads in the forum where they loudly complain about lens qualities, unsettle some more who start testing their lenses ... you get the drift. I would be deeply grateful if someone could shed a light on this, so this can be settled once and for all. heard that rumor several times but never actually saw one that had that softness at the long end. so it seems i gut lucky. The Tamron AFAIK is a fine lense if you dont mind some CA's The Sigma is so weak at the long end that (in the sample I had) images appeared out of focus. People usually recommend Tamron's version of the same telezoom. But both will be outperformed by Pentax's forthcoming DA 55-300 and DA* 60-250 F4. The SMC F 70-210 is quite good, but I haven't tried it on the K20D's sensor. dunno about Apple Mail, but in a decent mail client this should be configurable. thunderbird for instance lets you specify on a per-domain-base if the mail should be text,html or both .. and i'm convinced something like this is possible on a mac as well :-) Hello everyone! First, when my wife and I discover that those straw in our clothes pins bag where not there because of the wind but because a small bird was building a nest right there in our rear balcony, that was a great surprise! So I was enough lucky to capture all that story from the nest to the eggs, to small babies being fed, to more mature juncos. We even saw what was a small waiting before a first fly! Would it be a crash? Surely not but the fly was in a way very hesitant at the first movements of the wings. How they know doing all that? Nature is amazing and I am glad to have been a close spectator of all that evolution from the nest to the first fly! help needed for new pentax lens website
Hi everybody, as mentioned in the subject, i need your help :-) I'm in the process of building a website that will hold a database with all lenses usable on Pentax bodies (with preference for the digital ones). I know, there is Bojidar Dimitrov's excellent k-mount web page (and some others), but thats not what i have in mind, because kmp has a pure technical perspective and it is restricted to Pentax lenses, while i would like to cover *all* lens producers that are usable on a Pentax body, and my project will offer more participation for users, it will be possible to rate lenses, add comments, there will be a list of external resources (URLs) pointing to lens reviews users can add to, etc .. somewhat like a Wiki but mostly with structured data (so for example one can easily filter for ultra wide lenses that offer automatic aperture, have a availability rating greater than 3 and a overall quality rating greater or equal 4) and a set of permissions with what a particular type of user(anonymous, registered user,staff,admin) can do or not. i think you get a rough idea. Problem is, this is some amount of data i have to collect and to maintain, thats why the whole thing is database driven which in turn means, no html skills will be necessary to add and maintain data, and I'm optimistic that I'll find sooner or later someone who's interested in helping me. Second Problem is, i don't know 99% of these lenses, and thats why i come to you guys. Getting functional characteristics of a lens (weight, size, focal length, aperture etc) is in most cases no big problem, thanks to google, but what i would like to have are descriptions of the lens, preferably from someone who had it in his hands and did some shots. Pictures of lenses are also very welcome. Of course contributions will be attributed and pictures will have a explicit copyright notice, with a link to the homepage of the contributor or something similar, except the contributor does not want to be mentioned. pentaxmagazine.org seems to be available :-) and call it Pentax something, It doesn't really matter right now. We could make it an online bi-annual: a spring/summer issue a fall/winter issue. We'd include features, how-tos VERY specific to Pentax equipment usage, Pentax equipment reviews, a photo gallery, Pentax events, Pentax history features, photographic movements, photographic scholarship, and regular departments. And more . . . We could vote for folks willing to be on the editorial committee. We'd draw from the rich skills, technical know-how, and international experience so evident on this list. Hi P.J., I didn't make myself clear enough it seems (sorry, english is not my native tongue, but i'll try my best). The point is not to have a *complete* list of lenses that in theory can be somehow attached to a pentax body, who would want that anyway? maybe such a list would be historical interesting for one or the other, but it's not my goal. I would like to have everything in there that has still practical relevance (with relevant i mean there are chances to pick one up at the bay, for instance), thats enough for me (and thats mainly k-mount lenses, and maybe some M42s). If someone feels the M35 or something even more exotic needs to be in there as well, he can of course enter them, no problem. Thats the beauty of a database solution ;-) cheers Andreas P. J. I only plan a run of maybe 30 because they're for gifts to people over there and family here. So I've been looking at self publishing web sites like Lulu and Blurb and such. A friend of mine recently got involved with a multi-level marketing company called Creative Memories. Their focus is more on electronic scrapbooking, but they have a service that would be appropriate for what I'm doing. It's a little pricey, but I considered doing it through them to help her out. Being a bit sensitive to intellectual property issues, I read the Terms of Use (ToU). It contains the following section: Idea submission statement Any ideas, proposals, and/or other information submitted or collected on this site shall be considered non-confidential. By submitting information to this site, or directly to Creative Memories, you agree that Creative Memories shall not be under any obligation of confidentiality or non-use, express or implied, with respect to any submissions, and Creative Memories may disclose or use any submission for any purpose whatsoever, at its sole discretion, with no obligation, express or implied, to compensate or work with the person or entity that supplied the information, idea and/or proposal in any manner. Now, that's a pretty far reaching claim. Here it is again, elided to focus on what I have a problem with. ... Hi, I'm no colorspace expert either, but here's what i know: default in webbrowsers that are not colorspace aware is sRGB, so pictures stored with ProPhoto or Adobe RGB should display incorrectly in those. I dont have a OSX machine but i think Safari is color space aware, FF2 is not, FF3beta should be (not sure on a mac, but definitly on windoze), not sure about the IEs either as i ignore them as much as i can. if you resample the images the colospace information will probably be dropped (i doubt very much that gdlib knows anything about color spaces) and images are displayed using default sRGB color space ... So probably best for you is to use sRGB instead of ProPhoto, if you produce stuff for the web cheers Andreas This may be slightly off-topic. But maybe someone here can help. Something I don't get at all is all that color space thing. I read a little about it and decided to just go with the Lightroom default of ProPhoto RGB, but I am now running into problems. The symptoms: sRGB, Adobe RGB and ProPhoto RGB Jpegs exported from LR will all look identical in Safari 3.1 on OS X 10.5. They all look exactly like the original looks in LR. But they all look different from each other in Firefox, and in FF also look different from the original in LR. If I resize and resample them using GDlib (in a php script), the resulting Jpegs will look like the original Jpegs do in Firefox, which is different from what the original looks like in LR. But at least it is consistent in Firefox. But in Safari, the resized images will now also look like they do in Firefox, which is different from the original Jpegs. I have put up an example: http://ntony.codewut.de/temp/test.html If you look at it in Safari and Firefox, you will see what I mean. Maybe someone can explain what is happening there? How do you deal with that? recently i read about a guy who did sent some BW images to his print shop .. and got some with a nice green touch back ;-) Turned out he had fiddled with color spaces in PS .. Hi, Personally, I'd just download the latest Lightroom and use it on trial for 30 days, then ante up. You'll still need to run the camera in RAW/DNG output mode until v1.4.1 is released for PEF support. what do you mean with waiting until v1.4.1 for PEF support?? Does the K20 have a different PEF format, i have here LR 1.3 and that reads the PEFs of my K10D just perfectly?
