GESO, with the trusty Jupiter 9

2009-06-29 Thread Beaker

Hi-

A new GESO at http://www.flickr.com/photos/62343...@n00/sets/
72157594414463840/

I limited myself to a Jupiter 9 85mm lens. It is a little long for
the Hail Mary shots on the subway platform- hard to focus in the dark
too. Plus, the lens is surprisingly soft wide open. The first one had
a little too much camera shake. It also shows the poor color. And
this is after adjusting the color balance. So the rest are in B&W.
Sort of "Before and After" Lightroom.

The outdoor pictures were taken at 200 ISO, with the lens set at its
hyperfocal distance- except, the two "Sidewalk Guys", where I had to
focus the lens.

What do you think? I like the subway pictures well enough, despite
the focus problems. Anyone else agree?
The outdoor photos show the lens to be sharp, as long as it is
stopped down.

The "Sidewalk Guys" where shot to be used as desktop pictures.

Any comments?

Cheers
Mike

MTO makes an 1 1/4" adapter that screws to the back of the lens.
So, you can pick the eye piece that will give you the magnification
that you need.

The Minolta adapter limits you to a single magnification. Handy if you

My interest in stick and ball games is practically nil, and my

The weird thing is that this even extends to photography. I love to
take pictures, I love to process them, I even enjoy showing them

that I generally go out of my way to do, apart from the educational

I wonder how many other photographers love to take and create photos,
but don't have a lot of interest in looking at them, even their own,

would know that these models were really made and others such as the
''PENTAX K1000 SILVER LABEL''; ''PENTAX HONEYWELL SPOTMATIC JUBILEE'';
''PENTAX SUPER PROGRAM RED''; ''PENTAX KM GOLD/SILVER LABEL''. I
have been
collecting cameras for 45 years and sometimes still come across
models that
I have never seen before and that are impossible to find online.
There are
no collectors that have seen everything they are interested in.
Throughout

my many years of collecting, I have not only acquired many interesting
cameras and lenses but also many collector friends all over the
world. I

bought this camera from a friend of mine, a Japanese artistic
photographer. He bought this camera at a small show organized by
Asahi Co.

Ltd. Unfortunately, I do not have any official documents (receipts,
passports, etc.) that would prove the authenticity of this model.
After

this auction, it would have made its mark on the internet and will no

were not
able to find it anywhere. In 2009, I plan to start a website with a

They had parked a few yards from an Iraqi Army checkpoint. A tip was

NPR's Car was bombed today

2008-11-30 Thread Beaker

Hi-

NPR's armored car was bombed today. No human casualties- they were
very fortunate.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=97618965

Iraqi police warned them of the bomb, and moments later it went off.
So, no one was hurt. Eggs on side-walk were undamaged.

However, the car was reduced to a burning hulk.

They got audio of the police warning, and then the explosion.

Now, for the on topic bit- the reporter, Ivan Watson, got a nice
group of pictures on the web.

I imagine it was a Canon G10, since that is what they have been
buying lately. If anyone cares, I can find out for sure.

The big irony is that they were in a kabob house, doing a story on
the improving security situation in Baghdad.

The audio should be up in a few hours- maybe 7 or 8 pm EDT

Cheers

I'd tend to agree. A portrait photographer is NOT a reporter or
journalist and operates under a different set of ethics. And in
general the portrait photographers mentioned do so very clearly.

Jill Greenberg is an exception in that on the McCain incident. What
she did was clearly contrary to what the Editor requested. Of course

But first, Greenburg got the shot the editors wanted- the first image

Since she posted the "Evil McCain" picture on her own web sight, she
must not have
sold exclusive use of the image to the magazine. In her position, I
wouldn't even offer

the image to the magazine.

Then, at the end of the piece, she said that editors have sent her
out with instructions
to bring back unflattering pictures. So from her prospective, I can
understand why she

didn't consider it to be such a big deal.

I guess it depends on how tightly her contract was written.

BTW- I remember the Washington Post's photos of President Ronald

particularly new concept.

Anybody heard of any rumors of one yet? With the millions

it seems to me sooner or later somebody will step in

you cant use auto-only M42 lenses, hence
the need for a true M42 mount DSLR.

Sounds like the guy was using OS 9. OS X is a lot more stable.
OS X makes Windows seem primitive by comparison. The Windows boxes at
work remind me of bone knives and bearskins.

BTW, the portrait of the little girl is a stunner.

Oh- and when you buy a cassette deck, make sure it has a db meter.
Because it's
better than a VU meter. This from a salesman talking to an audio
engineer.
My friend, the engineer, was duly impressed. He didn't buy the deck.

That was a last minute addition. At first, I thought the guy was too

I need to get Rush Limbaugh to explain why it is a good idea to waste

PESO - Stars and Astronomers

2008-07-04 Thread Beaker
The Howard Astronomical League had an outing last Wednesday night.
The first successful event in quite a while. We tried the previous
Saturday. I got there just in time for a really hard downpour.
Wednesday was really nice weather- warm, no dew, and no clouds. I got
some pictures of stars, and astronomers.
Canon 10D, Tokina 12-24mm f4 lens wide open, exposures from 1/8 to 56
sec, ISO 100 to 400.

Next time, I'll try making RAW, ISO 200 exposures, and bracket to
find where the noise starts. Got to remember the Nikonos (sp?)
"viewfinder" ( no optics, just a frame with a cold shoe I use for
aiming with a pin hole lens.) The camera viewfinder is pretty much
useless for stars. The Tokina lets me cheat- set the lens to infinity

Hi-

I found a 50mm, f/1.4, Pentax Super-Multi-Coated Takumar M42 lens for
sale.
A quick google search says that it is a worthy lens. Only, nobody
says how worthy.
it looks like it was used, but not abused. It is clean, no yellow
glass, slight wear to
the aperture and focus rings.

The iris is a little sluggish in return to full aperture, but appears
clean, and oil free.

Any idea what it should sell for?

Nice lighting, and a lovely color to the sky.
A black sky would have been even better from a astronomical point of

but that would put you out in the middle of nowhere. Can't have

One of the local astro clubs observes from a park about 25 miles west

Its light dome is affectionally known as the 'Baltimore Nebula"

What Casey did during GFM

2008-06-08 Thread Beaker
My niece Casey graduated from High School on GFM Weekend.
And I can prove it.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/sets/72157594492416654/

I limited myself to a single lens- an F 80-200/4.7-5.6 (thanks Boris)

A wider lens would have been nice

Casey is taking a photography class through FFA this summer.
So I left her the camera, long zoom and kit lens.
(All my other lenses are manual focus K Mount and M42 lenses.
One thing at a time)

She will some good pictures, and a stunner or two.
Can't wait for the portfolio.

I had a Minolta X-570 that I was quite fond of also- my 1st bayonet

Now I'll have to start looking for Minolta lenses...

I given the Minolta, and an Olympus OM-2n recently, and she promises
a Pentax that someone
gave her... Can't complain about spontaneous enablement!
