Seasonal Greetings from Downunder

2021-12-24 Thread Brian W
It's already 25 December here so Happy Christmas to all who celebrate it.

Best wishes to everyone for a happy holiday season and a safe new year. Let's
hope that 2022 will be a lot better than the last two.

Personal new year resolution - get my Pentax gear out more often and contribute
a few PESOs.

Cheers to all

Re: Pentax or Olympus?

2021-11-18 Thread Brian W
I've more or less moved to OLympus. I still have my K-5, K-01 & istDS and a
variety of lenses but I rarely use them now. I have an E-M10 & E-M5 II and
think they are the bees knees. I really like the electronic viewfinders and
don't find them at all inferior to the optical finders of the Pentaxes.

The only negative is the fairly short battery life but a couple of spares takes
care of that.

I really wish Pentax did something like this.

My problems are:
a) I'm not shooting much lately, and
b) When I do it's with my Olympuses (is that the correct plural?) :-)

I suppose I could try an OT PESO or two.

I was thinking something along these, not very good, examples:

the Memorial Day parade was just getting underway. The wet weather didn't deter
the event.

Re: Rejoined PDML

2021-03-13 Thread Brian W
Welcome back. I was here 10 years ago but don't recall your name - but memory
isn't a strong point at my age :-)

Before deciding on a K-70 it might be worth Googling "Pentax Aperture Block"
which affected several cameras including, I think, the K-70. It might be worth
considering a KP or even a lightly used K-5 II or K-5 IIs.

March PUG - Apology

2021-03-06 Thread Brian W
It seems I've overlooked submissions from Rick & Bill.

I'm not sure what happened. I have a system whereby submissions are redirected
to my personal email account but those two didn't show up there. On checking
the Komkon server, I see that they are indeed there.

Give me half & hour or so and I'll add them to the gallery.

Again, my apologies

I'm not sure what's happening here. The same problem arose last month. For
some reason the max file size has reset itself to 300kb. I know I didn't do it
so maybe Igor might have the answer.

Anyway, I've now reset the max size to 500kb, so try uploading again.

A reasonably large gallery this month - and some great black & white landscapes.
Well done all.

Just a short note on how to access the the high res versions of the images...

1. Click a thumbnail image on the index page.

2. This will open a low res version of the image (sized to fit on most monitors
without the need to scroll the image)

3. Click on the low res image and the full res version will open.

Re: OT u4/3

2020-11-22 Thread Brian W
I have two OMDs - the original E-M10 and the EM-5II. I like them a lot, so much
so that I rarely fire up my K-5 any more.

The EM-10, despite being about 6 years old is still my favourite of the two
because of its compact size & light weight. It loses very little in comparison
with the 5. The 10 series has moved on to the Mk 4 now but they all still retain
the compact size & weight. The Mk 4 has a 20MP sensor - the earlier ones have a
16MP sensor.

Combined with the little 14-42mm EZ zoom, the 10 series are the ideal travel
cameras in my opinion, although they aren't weather sealed (unlike the EM-5
series).

If you can pick up a good used Mk2 (probably the best of the series), it
shouldn't set you back more than a few 100 dollars.

Cheers
Brian

PUG Themes for 2021 - Final List

2020-11-20 Thread Brian W
As the saying goes - "you can't please everyone" - so here is the final list. I
had to leave in a couple of themes that were not popular and pad out the 12
months with two or three themes from past PUGs.

So, here is the list:
Jan: Weather
Feb: Landscapes in Black & White
Mar: Marine
Apr: Still Life
May: Railway
Jun: Open Gallery
Jul: Architecture
Aug: Snow
Sep: Mailboxes
Oct: Patterns in Nature
Nov: Flora
Dec: Road Less Travelled

November PUG is up

2020-11-05 Thread Brian W
G'day all

Biggest gallery for some time - well done all!

You will probably note that there is one image taken with a Ricoh. I know the
rules/guidelines state that submissions must be taken with either a Pentax body
or lens but, given that Ricoh owns Pentax and could possibly be regarded as the
saviour of Pentax, I've let this one through (great image, by the way!).

17 submissions to enjoy

View the November gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the gallery,
let me know.

2020-10-26 Thread Brian W

G'day all

Several people have requested that we increase the maximum resolution of
submissions and, after discussing it with Igor, the max resolution will indeed
be increased in 2021. Watch this space for further details.

Here are some suggested themes for 2021. Please indicate your least favoured
ones and/or suggest other themes (keeping in mind than anything too obscure is
likely to see low participation):

On the Beach
Food
Marine
Close up
Weather
Derelict
Landscapes in Black & White
Railway

Open Gallery
On the Farm
Architecture
Garden

Good to here from you in Lockdown Melbourne. Hang in there - the case numbers
are dropping.

Watching case numbers up here with some trepidation but they seem to be holding
steady at around 10 or less per day, for now.

Interesting photo - but the somewhat sombre feeling to it seems to fit the mood
of most of us these days.
