Hadn't been on the old family farm since we moved off it in '62. Not much has changed. The pine trees around the house have gotten bigger. The old barn is showing its age. I think the house is about 1920 era and the barn, maybe late 30s. But I never really knew. Something I noticed about landscape shooting in the area: You can still shoot 'scapes of the rolling hills and do so without power lines in the pics. That's getting tough to do any more. Not that I won’t be tempted, but I don’ t really need it. And the 77/1.8 takes up so little space in the camera bag... The one compelling reason I can come up with is for the better interaction of the newer coatings to the sensor. It seems that they're all made to play well together. A question of size
That DFA* 1.4/50 is obscenely large. Of course that's just a mockup they showed as the distance window is plugged. Still, makes me wonder if Pentax is going to pull a Sony and go for the prosumer market & less targeting the enthusiast. I don't know if the problem is a Pentax/Ricoh problem. It's a volume sales question and that old, vicious cycle. Local shop owner converts
Sound more like the title of a theological post. But a local camera store owner, avid sports and wildlife shooter, heavily invested in Nikon, gave the K-1 a try and has come over. Went into his store yesterday and he had this big smile on his face. He is more than impressed, especially with the pixel shifting and the astral features. And he is really excited that there is now a world-class Pentax. It's been a long time since the world-class LX. (Too bad the MZ-S was so short-lived.) He picked up an F50/1.4 from his shop and another lens, I don't recall which. Re: OT: Enablement... 4x5 monorail view camera
The camera is nice. Get a good focusing loupe. You'll really come to appreciate it. And a really good focusing cloth. And a changing tent. A bag is ok, but a tent is wonderful. And a good lens. The 135/235 is fine for b&w but that's it's limit. (I had one.) A modern NIkkor or Rodenstock makes a fine lens and these days the prices are quite modest. If you can dig up a Rodenstock Ysarex *135mm*, that's a keeper. It's among the last of the series and performs beautifully. If you happen to be rich, a Super Symmar ... Or camera bling ... http://static.photo.net/attachments/bboard/00F/00FHx2-28225684.jpg A few shots with a plasmat or a Tessar and you will soon see the image formation difference over and above the Gaussian design. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Semi-OT: Math guru needed
I would like to figure out how to use the monocular. Can't find instructions anywhere. It has a 4-division reticle inside with each division having 10 divisions. It appears that these may represent angles, with the outside edges being the full 6.2 degrees. But I could be wrong on that. For a right triangle where the base length is known and a second angle is known, what is the formula for calculating the height. I'd like to figure out how to use the reticle in that monocular. It's like Toyota introducing the Avalon as a sales step between Camry & Lexus. Many are happy with the 24MP K3 class of camera. But we all know the improvement in image formation on larger sensors. A 24MP FF would meet that need though the price would probably be higher. (This is evident in Bill Gekas' shots w/ the 645 vs the smaller sensor. It makes a difference.) And the older the smaller sensor gets the more its price will drop as a commodity. A $400 or so price difference is enough to allow good customer choice. If it were a $200 difference I would agree. Just a little fluid residue on the front element. No scratches or cleaning marks. Original Pentax lens hood with case. Hood is for the 50mm lenses. And the original strap, unused of course. The dust you see is mostly from me admiring it. Easily blown off. Just a couple tiny little marks from miniscule amounts of handling. Body still has the plastic protector on the baseplate. Re: Your guess on the Pentax Full Frame specs?
#1 The sensor will match some Nikon model. That seems all too obvious. #2 The software will not have all the features of the competition. #3 Pentax will introduce some software gizmo to make the camera unique and desirable. Dear Pentax, Personally, I would still like to see a decent Wi-Fi solution in every camera, with appropriate login for networking. Perhaps it should be located in a grip with its own battery since not everyone needs one. The grip would also have its own CPU. Some low-power solution like a smartphone cpu. Likewise the memory cards would become a disk-sharing solution with the camera having preference. This approach would all more efficient transfer of information than do the current implementations. Hire me. I can do this. Collin - No virus found in this message. Re: "100% reliable rumor" 46MP Sony FF Sensor
mark roberts wrote: >Since the current 36-megapixel cameras already out-resolve most available lenses it's a 28% increase in storage space >with little or no improvement in image quality. Of course you won't notice the difference on the web or 4x6 print. But remember way back when *all* our films had more resolving power than any of our lenses yet we sought finer-grained films. Why? Because they directly affect the result. To revisit an old analogy, it's like listening to brass on CD v LP. It's harsh on CD and clear on an old LP. The timbre, the nuances, are all clarified with greater detail. The CD satisfies most people. Same goes for a denser sensor. Better edge clarity, richer colors ... everything improves. Now, it may be at 92% - 95% top of the curve that makes no diff to the amateur. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
I don't understand
When we were in Philly I saw far more mirrorless than DSLRs in use. After getting home I was chatting with a local store owner who found that odd since mirrorless sales are only a fraction of the market. Maybe they were all in one place at one time? Then last weekend we were in Wisconsin and Illinois. (Fresh curds ... yum.) Had a good conversation with a pro who shoots for stock. He uses (another brand) DSLR for action and a Sony mirrorless for general use. He likes the size/weight for carrying around, and the good lenses don't hurt. So I wonder ... is it just the form/shape that chases people away from these cameras? -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

He chose Canon over Nikon because of the sensor. The feature of the sensor is the color from CMOS.
