ICBW but I believe that the same effect can be done using the shadow
luminance and compression sliders in the Tone Curve Tool of Lightroom.
Setting the shadow range using the points under the curve graph might also
be helpful.

I played with it on my laptop (P4 / 1.8 / 512 / XP) for awhile this morning,
but I definitely need more RAM. This site has several short video tutes for
each module by the likes of Dave Cross, Scott Kelby, and Matt Kloskowski:

I think that I might have to accept my freebie (as an RSP user) when it's
finally released. :)

Same here. Three desktops and one laptop on a Linksys wireless lan...one is
hardwired to the router, three connect via wireless adapters (three
different brands). Sometimes 1 or 2 won't connect (browsers only), or they
won't connect to certain websites but will to others. Happens about once
every 2 months. Don't know the hows or whys involved, but a modem reset
works every time for me.

Check out the Giottos P-pod. It's quite substantial and locks up tight
enough to support your weight as a hiking staff. A fluid head with a round
QR plate allows for fast vertical shooting. It has three steel rods that
store in the base and screw into the bottom to create a "tripod" or light
stand, or two screw into the top to make a very sturdy low angle tripod. I
doubt that any heavy lens would be too taxing for it. I've used mine with
300 and 400mm lenses and can't imagine going handheld again.

Jens, with the mode dial on M, simply set the aperture with the aperture
ring on the lens and press the AE-L button and the camera will set the
correct shutter speed for the scene. When the scene changes, just hit AE-L
again. You must first go into the custom menu and set "Use Aperture Ring" to
"OK" though. Just leave that as the default. I believe that this replaces
the Green Button on the D.

RE: Shooting Digi in JPEG Mode

2006-06-15 Thread Lou Billing

Concerning RAW converters, I've been fooling around with SilyPix for the
last few weeks and am just amazed at its performance. All the normal tweaks,
plus superior sharpening, noise reduction, curves, cropping, fine rotation,
perspective correction (they call it Digital Shift because it emulates a
shift lens) and probably more that I haven't found yet. The full version
eliminates the need for an outside editor for the most part. The crippled
version is free forever, full version is $140US (ouch), and you can activate
a two week trial of the full version in the startup dialog.

I'm waiting to see if Pentax allows us to upgrade to Photo Lab 3 when it's
released with the SP engine. The screenshots of the interface on the web now
seem to show similar controls and functions, but the text is Japanese so I
can't tell for sure. You can try the freebie here:

In the Ds' custom menu I set the AF to work with a press of the OK button
instead of a half press of the shutter button. With my thumb on the OK

now.

RE: PESO and issue with *ist DS

2006-05-12 Thread Lou Billing
I've noticed this with my Ds also. The angled edge of the dial makes it easy
to apply a small amount of downward pressure when turning it and this seems
to correct the problem. It also seems necessary to turn it slowly and
deliberately, one click at a time as well.

Now about some annoying issue I have with my *ist DS: when I use the
rear dial to zoom in/out in playback mode, or to change Aperture or
Speed or Exposure compensation, it behaves quite arratically:

- 100% OK when turned left.
When turned right:
- 50% OK
- 25% does nothing
- 25% turns right one or more steps!

I first suspected some dust or a hair or something slipped through the
gap over or below the dial, and tried to blow some canned air into it,
but this had no effect.

I'm now afraid it's a premature wear of the dial's contacts, but this
would be a very bad sign regarding the quality of construction of this
body, and for its future.

It's only 6 months and I have a 2 year guarantee, but of course I'm not
too willing to part from it right now...

Have any of you experienced this kind of behaviour?

Regards

Patrice

$20 / dozen at either Sam's or Costco, can't remember which. After they quit
