I suppose the symmetry was missed because the house is such a focal point,
and the mountain somewhat blurry.

Perhaps, if you pass that way again, take the photo from a point more to the
right, so that the peak of the mountain is closer (measured horizontally) to
the peak of the structure, and/or use a smaller aperture so that the
mountain peak is more in focus. I don't know that a tonal adjustment would
do it.

Re: PESO - olive sparrow

2007-05-07 Thread Maris V. Lidaka Sr.
Nice work setting up the perch, and an excellent photo.

There is without question a magenta color cast, esp. the bird and the perch.
Opening it in PS and using a calibrated NEC LCD monitor, the M channel is
about 5-12 % points higher than Y, and about 10-20 % points higher than C.
Using PS Hue Saturation on the Magenta channel, it looks normal when
increasing Hue by about 45, or alternately decreasing saturation by 65 (I
prefer the result using the Hue adjustment), or be decreasing the Magenta
curve (I used Curvemeister to avoid switching color spaces) from 56 down to
48. I can post the results if you want.

That guy was in a tree about 15ft (~4.5m) away. This shot is almost

effective way to add pop to an image, highlight feather detail and

Re: Anyone travel with a step stool?

2007-05-05 Thread Maris V. Lidaka Sr.
I used to have a Pontiac Bonneville with a sun roof (and traction control,
for our winters). My son unfortunately 'hit a pothole' and destroyed the
engine, and before I could have it replaced he hit an expressway ramp
barrier and wreaked havoc on the body. Total loss at that point (I was well
insured) so I traded it in for a van to drive my daughter to from college
in Brooklyn. Lo and behold, she called the beginning of her second
semester: Dad - COME PICK ME UP NOW. She's graduating locally soon, the
U of I at Chicago. Van not needed :-( Wish I had the Pontiac.

As to that crate - a similar crate, which collapses flat, and with wheels
and an extendable handle so that one can transport goods is sold. Check
your local Walmart, Kmart, etc. - I think they're under $25. Probably in

Re: How do you guys do panoramas anyway?

2007-05-05 Thread Maris V. Lidaka Sr.
From the June 2007 issue of Shutterbug, Techniques by Joseph A. Dickerson:

First and foremost, be certain that the camera is level. It must also
remain level as you pan through the images you plan on stitching. A tripod
equipped with a leveling stage can be a great asset but at the very least
use a bubble level that fits in your camera's hot shoe. Rehearse the shot a
couple of times to be certain of the alignment and overlap of the images.

If you are shooting with a wide angle lens you'll need more overlap.
Something approaching 50 percent is about right. If you use a telephoto lens
an overlap of 20 percent or so will be adequate.

Shooting panoramas is one time when you want to leave the polarizing filter
in the bag. Otherwise the sky won't match from shot to shot. You'll also
want to turn off the camera's automatic exposure system. I generally will do
the complete panorama several times, bracketing the exposure settings or
shooting in raw. Watch for things that move-waves in a coastal scenic, for
example, will almost guarantee that you'll have problems with stitching.

The best advice I can offer is to practice at home in the back yard or at
the neighborhood park. A trip to some distant locale is not the place to try
to figure out what you're doing.

Oh yeah, while you're practicing, let the kids get into each shot. They'll
love showing up as triplets or quintuplets, and so will grandma.

I was using DNG until Photoshop started supporting PEFs. I switched
over to Pef and saw no pressing reson to switch back. I don't think
there is a lot of difference between the way the files present
themselves, but the PEFs are 6 megs smaller, which doesn't hurt.

Convert to DNG within camera, or in Lightroom/Bridge/PS-Camera Raw?

Maris

The primary difference on disk, and the reason I convert to DNG, is
that Lightroom and Photoshop+Bridge+Camera Raw will embed updated
metadata into the DNG file where for PEFs the metadata is saved to an
external sidecar file. DNG saves disk space and some management
because of this. DNGs produced by conversion are compressed and just
a little smaller than PEFs too.

I normally do not photograph homeless people who live on the streets
as I think it is over-done, exploitative. But a moment came by as I
walked down one of the streets near Market and Geary. There was some
construction that occluded the sidewalk and a wooden walkway-bypass
had been built for pedestrians. This homeless woman and her dog had
found a place there, in a corner out of the wind, to warm themselves
in the sun for a bit and take a rest.

I found her expression, half-asleep with the dog at her feet in the
harsh light, somehow very human, very moving and emotive, primitive
in its simplicity. I made several exposures and, even though this
isn't the sharpest of them, it is the one that captured what I felt
 in seeing her there.

   http://homepage.mac.com/ramarren/photo/PAW7/22.htm

She awakened just after I made this photo and saw me sitting on a box
across from her, drinking a sip of water, camera in hand. We talked
for a few moments, and I gave her one of the bottles of water I had
in my bag. She told me that she had grown up in San Francisco and
returned here several years ago. It's a hard place now, it was
 softer then.

Re: How do you guys do panoramas anyway?

Tripod highly, highly recommended, though you can do without. A beanbag on
a rock, fence-post or car door can suffice. A level is recommended - but
you can pick up a small one at your local hardware store at $5.00 I'm
sure. Number of pictures depends on your lens, of course, Overlap 1/5-1/4
of the image.

Most important - find your exposure settings, then set them MANUALLY - as
you pan, auto-exposure may vary and you don't want that. You want identical
exposure frame-to-frame. Hustle if the light is quickly changing (say dawn
or dusk).

Tripod always, right? Is a level needed?

How do you make sure that you remain on the same plane (get the
 horizon on the same plane)?

If you were going to shoot a 180 degree shot, how many pictures do
you think it would take? How much do you try to overlap?

I am totally clueless on this one.

I like the original better - it has a certain 'wholeness' to it, a
completeness, and the dead leaves (not bare spots at all) add a significant
contrast to and interest in the bluebells, and to the trees surrounding the
clearing.

The cropped image is just that - cropped, and not very interesting for me.
It seems incomplete.

Re: bags bags bags ... photos and review

Sounds promising, though the 5 or 6 Million may be enough for me. 3
questions:

Would it (and would the 5 Million or 6 Million) hold 1 digital camera (the
hoped-for Pentax K10D) with lens, 1 film camera (Pentax ZX-5N) plus 1
additional lens. Additionally only instruction books, filters, film and SD
cards.

How is the padding quality and construction quality (stitching, primarily,
at the seams) - as compared to Domke or Tamrac?

Does it come with a pool? ;-)

Maris

Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote:
My big kit bag search has proven to be very successful.

I didn't want to just shoot pictures and say how much I liked the
Crumpler 7 Million Dollar Home after I received it. I wanted to work
with it for a few days at least and figure out how best to configure
it, see how it did in the field. I've done that now and, let me tell
you, I'm very happy with this one.

A set of pictures of the bag set up as I use it for my equipment is
 available at
   http://homepage.mac.com/godders/7MillionDollarHome/

As you can see from pictures 1 and 2, it's not a small bag but it
remains trim and tidy looking. The top handle is handy for hefting it
in and out of the car, into the closet, and the accessory loops on
front and side are just right to take both my Lowepro and Tamrac
accessory pouches and stuff if I should feel I need to carry even
 more junk.

I bought the bag specifically to fit what I consider a large kit.
And, on top of that, I wanted a bag that could carry all I wanted and
still be configured to work out of with ease in the field. Another
requirement was that it MUST be able to have the camera in it with
any one of my lenses fitted, and that there must be an individual
spot for each lens, minus the one on the camera, to make lens
 changing easy and smooth.

The 7Mill is deep enough that I configured it to hold the lenses in
individual compartments on the bottom, underneath where I normally
rest the camera with one lens fitted for carrying. This leaves a
pretty big compartment to the side of that which fits my notebooks
and other junk. The front bellows pocket is easily able to hold all
the small miscellanea of blowers/card case/remotes/batteries and has
an inside security pocket as well. The mesh pocket in the top I'm
only using minimally at present for a microfiber lens cloth, there's
a lot more room up there for other small things (spare lens caps,
 filter wallet, etc.)

A full load in the bag, for me, includes the following as you see it
 in these pictures:

K10D body with one lens on it.
 DA14, DA21, FA28, FA43, DA70 lenses
 two spare batteries
 wired remote
Card wallet with IR remote, six 2G SD cards
 Blower bulb
 lens cloth
 Notebook, paperback novel, one-two magazines
 Epson P2000
cell phone and journal in externally accessible pockets

The strap is threaded to put the adjusting ladder in front of me so I
can easily re-set how the bag hangs for walking vs working. I wear it
bandolier style on the left and shove it around to my back when
walking, pull it forward to work out of for lens changes and such.

I've taken it on four 1-2 hour shooting walks and I'm amazed. Despite
its much larger size, it does not feel substantially heavier or
bulkier than the Domke F803 Camera Satchel but it holds at least
twice as much ... and I still have space to jam more junk in as
needed. It's better padded too and protects the gear better. Working
out of it is a joy.

complaint of sorts is the lack of a hard protective cover over the
LCD, such as found on the Nikon D70.

Anyways, in talking to my photography friends, most of which are my
age or younger, I was always told to never leave the house without
something capping the front element. Skylight and UV filters are
handy universal protectors. Seemed like perfectly sound advice to
me, considering I can't leave the bedroom without getting a spot on a
white shirt. I can make it to the front door on a gray shirt. I
will have somehow put a scratch in the screen of a new PDA within
minutes of taking it out of the box.

So yeah, not having some sort of protection on the front of something
that has triple digits worth of investment in it does make me a bit
uncomfortable. It hadn't occured to me that these filters might be
degrading image quality, although it does make perfect sense now that
I think about it. But considering that I'm still working on the kit
lens, and $300 is a HECK of a lot of money for me to drop on another
lens, am I really going to see that much of a difference between
filter and no filter? I picked up a 3 pack of Quantaray filters
(skylight 1A, polarizer, and UV). I tend to leave the skylight one
attached to the lens. I've tried both with and without, and can't
really see any real difference in quality, but then I've also been
focusing more on learning the camera, than getting Ansel Adams level
 quality.

It is a bit dark, but I like this particular image being dark.

PC with a calibrated (2 days ago most recently) NEC LCD.

I think my monitor is a little warm compared to yours.
I also have the 23 cinema display. Mine is set at
 gamma 2.2 and a 6500K white point.

If I remember, isn't yours a tad cooler? I wonder if
 that would make any difference.

Congratulations! Enjoy the lens.

Next time you want to sleep, get bidding software (it does 'snipe' bids,
too) such as Auction Sentry [just remember to leave your computer ON]

After several years of searching I finally found and won an eBay
auction (150111393342) for a Pentax A*600/5.6 lens in pristine
condition. I wanted it for my lens collection which now includes all
of the A-series glass except the A*1200/8, which I've never seen for
sale. It should be great for long shots over Lake Erie from the
front porch of our summer cottage. It will be interesting to see how
the SR of the K10D works with it - at a little over 3 Kg it might be
marginally hand-holdable. I suspect that it will spend more time on
 my HD tripod, however.

This one was really hard to find - the only other time I saw one up
for auction on eBay, I accidentally slept through the close of the
auction and never got my bid in! This one cost a bit more than the
earlier one but seems to be in better condition (fingers crossed).

There is also an FA*600/4 up on eBay currently. but the price just
 makes my head spin!

Now that looks real - the embedded black chips visibly display that they are
black chips and not sharpening artifacts, and the concrete surrounding the
chips is smooth.

IMHO the resizing did it.

I'm just wondering what sort of in/out ratio you guys whit LOTS of

I wish they'd put some quick comments in when they decline images.

So, I'm walkin' along and I see this guy making faces at his

get to take a couple of snaps. I decided to enhance his silly face
by using the 85mm lens close up and shooting from a low angle.
Didn't care much about detail and precise focus as it was something a
little more abstract I was looking for. So, there you have it ...

I can't seem to load the page, which is interesting since I seem to
be able to load my own earthlink pages.
