Theater Photography

2006-12-03 Thread Matt Kelch
I've just finished uploading all the [decent] photos which I managed to
take during the performance of The Odd Couple at my high school. This
was my first time doing something like this, but I felt like I was
beginning to figure some things out by the fourth night. I found the
hardest part to be staying out of the way of the audience. I'm open to
any feedback, and you can view my gallery at
http://vulc4n.com/v/Photo/Theater/

Thanks,
Matt

Re: OT iMac question

2006-10-12 Thread Matt Kelch
From what I have heard boot camp makes it pretty easy to get XP
installed. In addition it gives you all the drivers and everything...
its a really nice solution. Once it is set up its just a matter of
selecting your which OS you want on boot, as with any bootloader. I'm
going to be heading off to college next year and I'll most likely be
getting a macbook and will have OSX, XP and Linux.

I think you mean 600MB/s... Thats basically an impossible transfer rate
for any single hard disk. The highest maintained transfer rate I have
seen is around 120MB/s. I'm not sure how they intend to record data
when this cam is running at full tilt.

This is an incredible camera... If I was rich I would be getting one of
these just to play with because it seems it can do just about everything.

Not going to be too portable is it? haha. Even then, assuming you had
8x 750GB drives (6TB) that would only give you somewhere around 800
minutes of recording time. Thats a shocking amount of data.

Noob in search of a lens [and hello].

2006-09-04 Thread Matt Kelch
Hello everyone, My name is Matt and have just recently gotten into
photography with the purchase of a Pentax *ist DL. I've been taking
lots of pictures around town, and having the camera for less than a
month I've taken over 1500 shots. Feel free to check my gallery at
http://vulc4n.com/v/Photo/

Now that I have had the camera for a month I have found that I really
need a lens with more reach than the 18-55mm kit lens. I don't have a
lot of money to spend (maybe around 100.00) Basically, I want something
thats reasonably fast (at least f4), is decent optically (something on
par with my 18-55 Pentax kit lens), and a zoom range somewhere within
the area of 50-220 mm. I have been doing a good bit of research and
have more or less settled on a few lenses. I have been successful i
finding two of them, but the third has proven rather hard to find.

Here is my lens list:
1. Vivitar Series One 70-210mm f/2.8-4.0 (v3 made by Komine) [with A
appature mode]
2. Pentax SMC A 70-210mm f.4.0
3. Vivitar Series One 70-210mm f/2.8-4.0 (v4 made by Cosina)

The last two lenses are relatively easy to come by, as is the first
without the A appature mode [can it be found with the A appature
mode?]. The question is, if the first cannot be found, which of them is
going to perform better? The primary use for the lens other than
shooting random stuff around town will be taking pictures at sporting
events. So, lots of use for high speed action in relatively bad
lighting. This makes me think that the Cosina made 70-210mm might be
the right way to go if the Komine made lens cannot be found. Has anyone
compared the Pentax lens to the Cosina lens? I'm curious how much worse
the Cosina lens is optically. For that matter, how much worse is the
Cosina than the Komine?

Also, if anyone has another lens that fits the bill please let me know.
I'm a noob and know next to nothing about pentax lenses.

Thanks,
Matt

Thanks for the response.

So, even taking into consideration the inteded usage (sports in
relatively bad lighting), the slower 50-200mm is what you think I should
get?

Looking at the pricing of the 50-200 it is probably out of my budget a
the moment. Being back to school means I can't work many hours. I'd be
happy with manual focus, though the option of autofocus would be nice.
Can you be more specific on how the Cosina lens compares perfomance wise
to other lenses, considerign it can be had for around 50.00. I'm
thinking that it will serve the purpose for now until I can geta few
hundred dollars to spend on better glass.

Thanks again,
Matt

I'm not very familiar with the limitations I will have to deal with

why is it I'm having such a hard time finding the Komine lens in a KA

I'm using the same ones. I've been equally amazed. They seem to las
forever, in fact I haven't managed to actually run them down in the
camera despite taking 700+ pictures at one point. I have not seen any
issues with discharge while my camera sat for a few about a week. Also,
why nto get a decent smart charger (like the ones Maha makes and two
sets of batts? If you leave the batts on the charger they won't discharge.

Doesn't CF use a modified IDE interface? That might be a large part of
why its still around.

Still in search of that telephoto zoom

2006-09-20 Thread Matt Kelch
Well, I managed to nab two of the elusive Pentax 70-210 f4 lenses, and
received one of them today. I was pretty shocked by how much it
weighed. Unfortunately this lens in particular is going to be going
back, it appears to have fungus and the guy described the glass as being
totally clean. Its also full of dust. Hopefully the other lens is in
better condition.

However, I was thinking about picking up a DA 50-200mm lens (is the
older non 'DA' 50-200mm just as light?), despite it being slower. The
weight will end up being about 1/3 of what these lenses are, so I will
atleast have a chance at using it without a tripod.

Thanks,
Matt

The SMC-F 70-210 is what I was thinking of. I take it its pretty heavy
and I'd be better off with the DA 50-200mm?

Loose lens mount on used SMC Pentax-A Zoom...

2006-10-03 Thread Matt Kelch
I recently picked up a used SMC Pentax-A 1:4 70-210mm zoom for around
40.00. Its in absolutely great condition, but the bayonet mount is a
bit loose where it is mounted to the rest of the lens. I'm not sure how
to go about fixing it if it can be fixed. Anyone have experience with this?

I was thinking those were it, but I was unable to tighten or loosen any
of them. I need to get a screw driver that fits better I guess. In any
case, I don't think its a big problem at this point and for 40.00 I
can't complain.

Need some help with lens reasembly...

2006-10-04 Thread Matt Kelch
In trying to disassemble a lens I accidentally dislodged a few parts
without getting a good look at how they went together and where they
went. I would greatly appreciate any help. BTW, it is a SMC PENTAX-A
70-210mm lens.

I've found the ball bearing, the spring is in the picture I believe.
(Its partially inside of the piston looking thing) I'm just lost at
this point how it all goes together.
