While I owned the K1000, I used to take it outdoors in the winter 
in sub-zero weather. Just had to store it in a plastic baggie to 
avoid condensation.  I haven't dared to try that with my MZ-5.

The options are not mutually exclusive -- Pentax should take 
advantage of all options where the expected marginal return will 
exceed the company's cost of capital.

The later version is made in China or Taiwan (can't remember 
which now) and has a *plastic* top and bottom.  I don't believe there 
were any other significant changes.

Yesterday, Adorama emailed me a quote of 899.95 -- must be 
inflation!
