OT - too long, not approprite - don't care

2020-06-08 Thread Pat Temmerman

 Long down mentaily alert!!!

A bit of an off-topic photo industry ditty (off-topic, not Pentax). Just
one of those random recalls of the past. Through the 80s/90s I worked
for a Japanese marketing company that supplied various brands of camera
equipment (later expanded to audio/TV – different stories) For retail
sales on US military bases globally. If any of you bought your first
equipment somewhere on a Army, Air Force, Navy base in Asia or Europe in
was supplied by my crowd or 1 or 2 others. This was a serious,
well-established industry. Tokyo HQ, fully staffed sales orgs in
Okinawa, Philippines, Viet Nam, and Europe. I was a Europe guy.

Anyway, early/mid 80s our primary product line was Minolta – just
nipping the heels for #1 position from Canon. We sponsored in-store
displays, active sales, special sales and occasional free camera
cleaning clinics. (We got great tech from Minolta Germany even though
our business was totally outside their business loop). Three – four
times a year they'd send a Japanese factory tech out that I would haul
around for a week our so to the bigger US bases like Frankfurt,
Stuttgart, Nuernberg, Kaiserslautern.

Saturday morning, Stuttgart. (Stuttgart was always Saturday morning...)
Guy brings in his 101. Disgruntled. I looked at it at it felt, well …..
sticky. Asked if something had perhaps, spilt. Nope. No spills. Wants a
completed refund on a 6 month old kit – lenses, filters, et al.

Over to the tech to have a look. Have you ever seen one of these factory
guys take a camera apart? Screw driver in each hand and – buzz – piles
of parts about 30 seconds later. Everything separated and organized.
Every screw in an exact place to be reinserted. Bare bones. Film advance
lever, rewind mechanism, base cap, top gone, top most circuit board
laying exposed to the elements. Slight sticky-looking gleam on the
board. Tech finally looks up at the horrified GI – he couldn't believe
the full-out assault on his camera! - and simply said 'Coke?'

Mr. horrified GI really cut loose – lawsuits! damnation! second invasion
of Japan! and refundrefundrefund!

Never taking his eyes of the customer, the tech picked up the 101 and
gave it a long, slow, clean lick from one end of the circuit board to
the other and simply said 'orange juice'.

Tech produced a plastic bag, swept all the camera components and debris
into it, handed back to the GI saying, 'warranty cancel'.

Back to lock down mentality. Notified today we still have 10 days to go.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/samellos/im-back-35-new-version-with-manual-priority-function/description

I think that just about ever photographer that started out with film has wished
that they could use their old favorite cameras to shoot digital. The problem
being that I can’t see the camera feeling right with everything added to it, so
you’d probably end up with the worst of both worlds. The only advantage I can
see is that it is nominally cheaper than buying a digital body that you can
mount the lenses to.

The sensor is a panasonic 34112 image sensor

It turns out that rather than focusing onto the sensor, they have a focusing
screen, which the imaging sensor takes a photo of. Something that I just can’t
see improving image quality.

https://backerclub.co/html.php?id=11823
"There is no crop factor? The sensor seems quite small, especially compared to e.g.
common APS-C sensors these days..."

There will have no crop factor from the size of sensor. The design of this product is called
"Depth-of-field_adapter" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth-of-field_adapter). In normal
digital camera, the image from the lens is directly projected onto the sensor. So the smaller the size
of the sensor, the more the image is cropped which we called crop factor. In this Depth-of-field adapter
"digital back", the image is projected onto the focusing screen, is almost 24mm x 36mm. And
then we use a digital camera to take a photo of this focusing screen. You can use a SLR, mirrorless or
any size of sensor to take this photo from the screen. There is no crop factor." Thanks. A. D. ;-)

What is interesting is the number of people that have already signed up to
spend $400 on something that should work so much worse with their lenses than a
used mirrorless body and a lens adapter.

I’ve never made a print of this particular image so I wanted to go back in and
make sure everything was just right. One problem with lightroom panoramas is
that you can’t specify to use a certain piece from a certain image. Their
whole stitching process is opaque and unpredictable, but I was eventually able

It’s a stitch of images taken with the 15-30, not using astrotracer. It would
be really nice if there was software that could stitch the night sky and the

Lived in Leuven, Belgium for many years. Had a local hobby / model shop
that totally ignored normal retail pricing practices. First noticed this
when we switched from the Belgian Franc to the Euro (exchange rate was
40 / 1 if I recall), and noticed the prices of models in the guys
window. Prices like 27.04, 113.87 and such. No rounding up / down to hit
'price points'. Many months later I noticed that the strange pricing
continued and realized it had nothing to do with the guy's handling of
the exchange rates, he was simply working on a fixed mark-up, final
retail price be damned. Last weeks Leuven news said that the shop was
finally closing down after 60 years. Whatever his policies, seemed it
worked for him. (As an aside, for reasons not really relevant, I
hankered for a model of a C-130A . Went in one day to ask if he could
get one for me. He basically said 'what you can buy is what you see'.
Rude bastid. Still, I went by at least once a week to see if there was
one in the window.

Re: Pentax lenses I want

2019-11-03 Thread Pat Temmerman
Have the DA16-50 and it was my 2nd favorite lens after the 43mm Ltd (or
maybe most favorite after being introduced to Scottish weather.) We were
away for a weekend to one of the western islands, decent weather.
Walking around all day, 16-50 was just fine. Back to the hotel for
lunch, back out and suddenly found that I had a 20-50. No drops, no
jolts. Lens just decided that I no longer needed the range from 16 to
20.  Found some references on this list to this problem, googled it,
checked service cost and decided that 20-50 wasn't so bad consider the
weagher sealing. Later decided that it was just too damn big and heavy -
and obvious - for walking around towns and cities, so I bought a 2nd
hand DA21 from Japan. Love it. Have since  bought the 28-105WP and tend
to go with that. Will still drag out the 16 (20) - 50 if I'm feeling a
bit land-scapey in inclement weather.

I already have a Sigma 17-70 f2.8~4.5 which covers the range, and suits my

Plus the Tamron 17-50mm is a wee bit better optically by all accounts and much
closer to my budget.

I wouldn't turn my nose up at the Pentax if I could get it for the same price
as the Tamron, since it probably beats it like a rag doll as far as build
quality is concerned.

I figured I'd start a thread about lens lust. Note this is not "lenses I
need". I have too many as it is, covering every focal length I care about
(which doesn't go much further than 100 or 135mm anyway)

DA15/4: I have the DA21mm, and it's an awesome lens. Seems like the 15
would be a great companion to it. I don't really need it, since I have some
zooms that cover this focal length, plus I haven't been shooting with the
KP much anyway.

M20/4: I don't know why I want this one, I just do. I really like the M
lenses. I do have the DA21 Limited for APS, and the Sigma 20/2.8 for APS on
the Sony, and an awesome Zeiss 21/2.8 for full frame on Leicas and Sonys.
And that's without counting the zooms that cover that both on APS and full
frame: I have a 17-70/4, a 12-24/4, and a Canon 17-40/4 that covers full
frame with fast AF via an adaptor on the Sony.

M40/2.8: I just always wanted that little pancake lens. Don't need it, as I
have tons of both 35mm and 50mm lenses, plus a really nice Konica Hexanon
40mm/1.8 that is perfect for the A7ii.

DA20-40: This seems like the perfect street lens for the KP. Been wanting
it since it came out, but never pulled the trigger. Again, I already have
other lenses covering this range.

K85/1.8: I had this lens. It fell from my motorcycle jacket the day I was
getting my istD back in 2004. I never saw it again. It's not a FL I
regularly use so it's hard to justify. I had found it in pristine condition
for under $100 back in the late 90s.

M28/3.5: This was my main 28, my copy seemed to be a lot sharper than what
should be legal. I lost it years ago. I do have an M28/2.8 and the
FA28/2.8, plus a Takumar 28/3.5 (the big barreled one). Oh and I do have
the awesome K30/2.8 and a bunch of other 28s for other mounts, so it's
super hard to justify buying this one.

Takumar 50/1.4, 8 element: I REALLY don't need this. My best 50mms are a
Summicron, the A50/1.4, maybe the M50/1.7 or FA50/1.7 (yes, I have all
those plus a lot more 50s!)

K50/1.2: Again, I don't need another 50. But it sure would be nice to play
with that extra third of a stop.

How about you? Any lenses you've always wanted but haven't gotten around to
getting? Any opinions on that list above?

I could never quite persuade myself I needed the older FA* 28-70/2.8

because I was mostly doing motorsports photography - very different

met my needs for the occasional pit or paddock shots.

I'm waiting to see whether the announced flagship APS-C camera body
makes it all the way into production; if it does, (and assuming that
it has the sort of feature upgrades that could tempt me) there's a
fairly good chance I'll buy one last Pentax body. But despite what
my PDML T-shirt says I'm not sure I'll be buying any more lenses;
the main potential candidate - the D FA 150-450 - would add quite
a bit to whatever the new body (plus grip) would cost.

different reasons, but both fun to shoot with. The MX-1 in particular is a
delight to take photos with--you should have seen me last month on Paris, I
was all like and . I lacked only the accent and the hat from
the guy in that hilarious MX-1 Pentax ad.

Anyway, here is the PESO: Pepe, one of my dogs. Taken with the Q7 and the

via the Flash remote. Cropped and edited to taste in LR.

That being said, each series is rather tame compared to recent events in
Washington and London. Is civilization about to disappear from both

sides

of the North Atlantic?

One is able to discern an ultimate resolution of the American circus,
albeit a very messy one. It is hard to conceive of where the British

drama

will end. The latest speculation is that the courts may wind up throwing
the PM into jil for refusing to obey the law recently passed by
Parliament. Without a written constitution establishing separation of
powers, I don't see how this can be done, or how a stand-off between the

PM

and Parliament can be resolved.

And then there is Jacob William Rees-Mogg, a truly fascinating character.
mHe seem the embodiment of an American's warped conception of an
upper-class Brit, something conceived by Monty Python or nurtured by
Jeeves.

Perhaps we could trade BoJo for The Donaldto0 see if that would somehow
facilitate progress on one shore of the pond or the other.

some in the UK refer to Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson as the
UK's own 'Poundland Trump'. I may, or may not, be one of them..

Keith,
Thanks for the offer - I haven't saved any of the messages, but if things go
"as usual" it should happen again in a day or two.

Cheers,
Pat

You can't unsubscribe and I can't stay subscribed - majordomo sends me a
message every few days bumping me off the list.

Must be a PDML/Hotmail thing...
