You relinquish a lot of control, have to trust more.
Somehow despite the limitations (or maybe because of them) the process is
creative and enjoyable (at least it was for me both times I tried).

Have another look at it as Christine and a couple of others suggested...
cropping down from the top... I think it would be stronger -
I'm not a square format person, but if you are then well, hey, it is
 ulitmately your eye..

Just think it would be stronger without the large area of black at the
top... - the light is great, and the scene is interesting, colors good.
But I maintain it woulbe be really super with a bit if a crop.

Just was curious about the original frame.

 Sasha,

 It's a very nice job.
thanks Igor,

I am curious, however, if it was a posed shot, or it was taken
in dynamics, i.e. while she was dancing.
It was something in between in fact :)
We started with static poses and it went quite well.
But here asked Stef to start moving - she was not dancing, but rather pose.
Legs and feet were almost static.
Hands were moving, hips were also moving slightly.
This way we added some extra life to the shot.

--Sasha

Either is perferctly fine, it's just my curiousity.

If you are curious to find out why I am asking:
It follows multiple discussions on relation between the dance and
photography that I've had over the last few years, certain aspects that
I've learned and figured out. The big caveat is that now, I am trying
to extrapolate it to a very different dance. With that, my educated
guess is that she was not dancing when this shot was taken
At most, she may have beem moving specifically into that pose, but
more likely than not, she was not moving, but just posing in a static pose.

Now, I am curious to see if my guess was correct.o

 Cheers,

 Igor

Thanks Christine.
Colors are mostly from the city of Guanajuato.

Yep, we stayed there - it is a bread and breakfast in the middle of
nowhere - the town used to be quite big, they were mining copper and
other metals.
Then there was earthquake bundled with financial and political instability.
Most of the hoses are abandoned now. Many are in ruins.
And in the middle of all that there is this peaceful place(it is also
great outside).

I am uploading more photos slowly by the way.

Subject: High ISO noise on the K-5

There was a live band at the weekly blues dance last night. For various
reasons I decided not to shoot with flash, but just go with available
 light.
The musicians would nod their heads fast enough that I kept having to boost
the ISO to get a fast enough shutter speed, and ended up shooting at ISO
20,00. The thing that impresses me the most isn't the lack of noise, but
 the
 quality of the noise.

With my K20 the noise was mostly blue, which just looked bad.  With the
K-5 even when the noise is really obvious, it looks almost like one of
 those
paintings that are done with making little dots. Stippling?
 Impressionistic?

Mind you, for ISO 20,000, the noise is pretty freaking amazing.  The
thing that I notice more than the noise in some shots is the dynamic range,
when there are bright lights in the background, posterization abounds. In
some cases I get this weird halo effect around the people, I suspect that
 it
might have something to do with the out of focus blur bringing the bright
lights in the background out of clipping and into color.

If you buy the hardcover with dust jacket version of the book (not
the ImageWrap) you get bonus photos on the inner flaps of the dust
jacket, one by Rick Womer and one by Carl Gjersem.

 More information:
I want to express my appreciation to all who donated to the book
promotional fund. Most people contributed $5.00 and we got $340.00
total. With the 10% volume discount and the 25% GMA discount (yes,
Blurb allowed both discounts) I was able to order a dozen books for
the price of 10, including shipping costs. I think there's even a bit
left over in the kitty to allow me postage money for sending *out*
review copies when I get them.

I'm looking for suggestions/ideas for promotion. Print magazine
reviews are pretty much out of the question: They already get more
review samples than they have time for and we'd be just an tiny fish
in a big sea (unless we can get someone on the inside to help - anyone
owed any favors by low people in high places?)

I'm also offering the ebook version on line for $6.00 through my own
web site at the moment. I've worked out a deal to offer it through the
Apple iTunes store through one of their official distributors, but I
won't be able to finish the paperwork and details until the end of the
semester - things are getting busy now.

Sasha, I am thinking that if you cropped the second image similarly (in
geometric sense) to the first one, the continuity between the two would be
stronger and they would really work as a pair. As it is, the second image
strikes me as the weakest link.

In the third image, I am thinking that including the tattoo on her left hand
in its entirety would add the intrigue or conflict between her looks and
whatever is engraved in her skin. Yet I think this is the strongest image of
 the series.

And the first image - it surely works, but it almost begs for continuation
whereas the second image is unfinished and thus spoils the viewer's fun a
 little.

All in all - you did great but please bear with my remarks nonetheless.

Boris trying to be brutally honest and politely constructive.

 right direction.

that's a good move in the direction of what i was thinking; i think there
are a lot of possibilities to explore with the scene, such as enhancing the
subtle spiral effect or making the negative forms more sensual; but for
working with the one original photo i think that's a real improvement

I like the first one.  Almost atomic age steampunk. Is that what they call
 dieselpunk?

The unconventional lighting works well.  I'm guessing two lights, one from
each side, with front fill just reflecting off the wall behind you?
Almost.
Two lights at sides and behind her.
A third one used as a fill - shot throw a triangular diffuser - you
see it's reflection in her goggles.

My hunch is that a different color background would work better, but I don't
have the perfect suggestion.  The sea-foam green that they used to paint
government offices in, back in the mid sixties might work well with the
 atomic-age feeling.
It is quite easy to replace the background. Thanks for idea.

I can't find any real technical flaws with the blond wig shot, but it doesn't
work for me nearly as well.  It comes off almost at 80's rockstar, but the
tank top and tat don't quite feed into that trope.
Thanks, that's what I really love to hear - something that you do not
find very compelling and your thoughts about it.

I think that the fourth one, which you added later, would be stronger if you
cropped out the light on the right edge of the frame.

Please tell me what you think.

Overall, the set is technically flawless.  Alex could do quite well in
modeling. Were the outfits her ideas?
He brought the outfits and did makeup herself.

Yet I think this is the strongest image of
 the series.

And the first image - it surely works, but it almost begs for continuation
whereas the second image is unfinished and thus spoils the viewer's fun a
 little.

All in all - you did great but please bear with my remarks nonetheless.

she looks strong in the first, vulnerable, even scared in the second; both
impressive as photographic craft, but my critique would be more about what
 is conveyed:

the first looks more posed in expression, perhaps a little too tense, and
would be more interesting for me with a little of the vulnerability (maybe
not quite head on vantage point, or eyes not directly into camera)

in the second there is a conflict between her expression and the slightly
overwrought costume; i would consider reducing the illumination below the
shoulders, or even a less striking outfit to avoid distracting from that
 vulnerability

of course if she's wanting that look of strength, you could pretty much
invert my suggestions, and maybe make a more active pose in the second,
though i doubt they'd be as compelling to me personally

I like it, but don't love it.  I suspect that it may work better in color
which would help the various elements stand out.  The lighting looks a
little bit flat.  Another think to try, in black and white would be to go
all kodalith on it.  whack out the contrast until everything is black, or
 white, no grey tones.

That is also one of those photos that I would be inclined to at least try
 looking at upside down.

Ecke: it is more or less strait out of the camera, uncropped.
I had to lighten up the bottom half (gradient filter in lightroom),
tweak contrast color balance a bit.

As for the dark one - it was not so dark out of the camera. I like
 darkness (sometimes too much).

 Thanks.

Btw, if you are near SF the Bresson exhibition is still there.
