My source tells me 20-24mp sensor, no FF (yet), and due October. Better af, possibly tethering, possibly faster flash sync speed, possibly dual slots. Tethering is a massive issue for me, and they wouldn't confirm that for me, but did allude to it. Re: New weatherproof flash units HD Limited lenses
It totally is Larry! Just the other week, I had 4 540s set up with soft boxes and was losing ambient light fast. The family I was shooting were almost over it and we were just about to start shooting my final series of shots when it started to rain. It was only light rain and pose no problem to the family or my camera but of course as soon as I realised what might happen with any of the flashes getting wet we had to can it. Booke in a reshoot, a whole extra days work and all of that setup wasted! Grr! If your talking digital capture images, this metadata is an embedded part of all out-of-camera raw and JPEG images, don't need to do anything for Lightroom to import it. You can display it using the Library module's Metadata panel. The popup menu next to the panel title gives you the option to switch between a number of metadata display and editing templates. If you want to see it as an overlay on the image in the main window, look in the View menu, in the section that starts with View Options, to set it up. In the Library module's Grid mode, you can also configure the cells in their largest expansion display form to include metadata in the four corners of the upper info box of the image cells. Just click on those areas and you get a popup menu with the items you can display. Sigma 20-40mm/f2.8
So, a few months back I snapped up a reaaally cheap Sigma 20-40mm/f2.8 – brand new from Digital Camera Warehouse for like $315 (they look after me well! ☺ ) - http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod2549.htm . I thought, what the hell, I’ll give it a go for that price, and the reviews weren’t too bad. Most just complaining about flare and vignetting which are two of my favourite things! Lol. It has been so frustrating! Really hit and miss, some shoots have been beautiful, and others blergh! Last night, I happened upon this post: http://pentaxdslrs.blogspot.com.au/2012/01/front-or-back-focusing-problems-free.html And so, I followed it and tested the lens today. I have heard heaps about “back-focusing” issues but never really knew what it meant as I’ve never had a focusing issue before. I discovered that the 20-40mm has a bad back-focusing issue! It is beyond the scope of the -10mm adjustment on the K5, so I’m going to send it back tomorrow. Cool though cause with some recalibration, it may end up being a really lovely little lens for the price. When it focuses correctly, in shoots that are close up, I really enjoy using it, and it gives a lovely result. Anyone else have this lens or any experience with it? Re: Pentax releases data
So in a nutshell, the main differences are the improved AF, new video modes and the removal of the AA filter? I relly wish it had flash sync of 1/250, that would be awesome. Can somebody explain to me the main difference between the K5II and the K5IIs? Is it just the AA filter? Is that a significant enough difference to warrant two completely different bodies being released? A bit confused here? (and gutted that there is no FF as promised, but let's not talk about that! A few months ago Luminous Landscape did some comparisons between the two versions of the D800. Initial tests showed the superiority of the D800E (without AA filter) but several people pointed out that standard capture sharpening would reduce the difference significantly. He posted more samples, this time with capture sharpening applied to both cameras and the difference between the two was *drastically* reduced. Reichmann insisted that the difference would be apparent in print but I really think he's kidding himself here. Differences in print are always *less* than pixel-peeped 100% views and after seeing his tests I wouldn't pay extra for a camera without an anti-aliasing filter. -- Mark Roberts - Photography Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Can you imagine my surprise when, at the Gala Dinner, my name was announced to be the Canon AIPP Australian Professional Creative Photographer Of The Year Runner Up for 2012!! I am not sure how that happened but am so excited and humbled to accept the title as it is only the second time I have entered the awards! Amazeballs!! Can you believe that little ole me and my little K5 could achieve this?! I'm still pinching myself!! Additionally, The scores that I received also gave me 5 credit points which means that in only 18 months of being an AIPP member I have now qualified as an Associate, with 3 points to go towards becoming a Master. I can't actually use the title until I have been a member for 2 years, but is exciting all the same! The Pentax Australia guys even came to find me and fill my bag with all kinds of Pentax bits and pieces, although no 645D yet! Don't worry though, I'm working on them! ;-) ...and now back to Earth with a thud! RE: What to charge for family portraits?
I would NEVER, EVER give raw, unprocessed files. Processing and editing to me is as important as the initial capture in achieving the final product, if not more so. If I were to cover an event, it is $350 per hour, plus $950 for a disc of high res images. (Weddings are different though). Or for a family portrait session that is 2-3 hours, I charge $150 during the week, and $200 on the weekend (add $150 to this if it is a styled shoot) and then they select and purchase their images from a proofing gallery. It is $99 per high res digital file, or $1150 for the complete disc. Print packages from $1200 for 10 x 7x10 matted prints in a museum quality folio case. Canvases from $500. All prices in aud. RE: Best 80-200mm?
I concur. When I am teaching workshops, I regularly have to use Nikon, Canon and the like, depending upon what cameras the attendees bring (and of course, ask questions about), it usually just takes me a few minutes to locate the important stuff and then, I'm away. In saying that, I agree with Paul - I would never have different bodies/brands for the one shoot - the biggest reason for me would be the requirement of carrying different proprietory gear such as flash guns, sync leads etc - I need to be able to grab something quickly and know that it will work with whatever I am shooting by way of lights, filters, light modifiers etc. To carry around all of this stuff to suit both Pentax and another brand would be a huge pain in the arse. -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Mark Roberts Sent: Friday, 26 August 2011 4:40 AM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: Best 80-200mm? The differing controls/interface isn't as big a deal as you would expect. I deal with it when I'm shooting with both my K5 and my A850 and it's not much trouble. Great food for thought Stan! Thanks so much! I have also been doing quite a lot of (adult) fashion of late, and wanted the 80-200mm reach for compression as well as for use with my standard kid clients. I just did some initial research on reviews etc and it seems like the 50-135 comes up trumps. Good price too, I can pick one up new for under $1k. :) I think that's what I'll go with, I'd love the old 80-200mm, but if the 50-135 is lighter, it will be a good thing with my weak, girly little wrists. :) I'll post some pics when I have it in my hot little hands! xx -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Stan Halpin Sent: Wednesday, 24 August 2011 9:36 AM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: Best 80-200mm? I currently have the DA* 50-135/2.8 and the DA* 60-250. (I sold the FA* to be able to afford to buy the two newer lenses.) Comments: 1 - Note that the FA* 50-135/2.8 on a K-5 is equivalent in every way to the FA* 80-200/2.8 on a Pentax 35mm film body. Except that the DA* is lighter, easier to handle, has faster autofocus, and is cheaper in today's market. So if you want the classic 80-200 FOV range and functionality, by all means go with the 50-135 and you will love it! 2 - For what you want to do, you will probably find the DA* 60-250 to be too heavy and too bulky; it is very like the old FA* 80-200 in that regard. 3 - So, if the kids are running around in a indoors space, go with the DA* 50-135. If they are running around on a football field, go with the DA* 60-250 for the extra length. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
RE: Best 80-200mm?
Thanks so much for the offer John! BGN condition is of no consequence to me, I am really hard on my gear, and most of my stuff ain't pretty anymore. :) My 28-70/2.8 Tokin at-x pro, has seen one too many beach shoots I'm afraid and crunches like there's no tomorrow when focusing. :) In saying that, I have decided to go with the DA* 50-135, purely as it is lighter, and weather sealed which is important for my shooting style. I am embarking on a collaboration with a really well known aussie photographer (he shoots Nikon!), and we are going to be doing a series of underwater work, so the more sealing I can get on my gear, the better, just in case something should give way in the housing that I am using and I end up with some drips in there... It's cosmetically in KEH BGN condition; it's had quite a lot of use around racetracks, where there's a lot of concrete walls, rough surfaces, etc. But it went back to Pentax in 2007 for a repair and tune-up (the internal focussing mechanism had to be replaced), and it hasn't had too much use since then, so it ought to be in good operating condition. There seem to be several of them being offered on eBay at buy-it-now prices ranging from $1448 to $2000. I'd guess that would suggest that a fair price for mine is probably somewhere in the $1000 - $1200 range. Perhaps, fortunate to a degree. But, I shudder to consider living in a region where a monster like this could potentially be back on the same streets that my kids inhabit in just 21 years. So perhaps we won't see a 2000+ year prison term derived from each crime being penalised individually. One of our Norwegian friends might enlighten us on that question. Correct. You can never get more than the maximum penalty for the worst offence. But, like Dag said, even though 21 years is the maximum normal punishment, but one can also be sentenced to containment, which is indefinite, but with reassessment after a certain period, for crimes that violate the life, health or freedom, where there is a clear risk for repeat crimes. This was used e.g. in for several convicts in a high-profile case a few years ago where less violence seemed to be involved (if you can put it that way) - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOKAS_robbery. Some of this is also described in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_imprisonment_in_Norway. I believe the article is a bit inaccurate, but it does convey the basic principles. - Toralf A common ruse of prosecuters is to only charge a defendant with a portion of the crime so that fresh charges can be brought after the prisoner has served out his first sentence, and so on. Send him down for the murders, then another bite of the cherry for the bombings, plus I'm sure there'll be a veritable shopping list of terrorism, impersonation of a police officer, firearms, transport of dangerous goods, and as many other things as the prosecuters have the creativity to define. These are all serious crimes so I don't think any statute of limitations, if Norway has such a thing, would come into play. If it did, then they'd simply start with the crimes that expire first. The prosecuter could make a very long game of this. It's going to be a long time if ever before this man sees freedom. But, I shudder to consider living in a region where a monster like this could potentially be back on the same streets that my kids inhabit in just 21 years. He should at least be locked up the rest of his life. They probably don't hand out consecutive sentences like USA courts give, either. I really can't see him on the streets in 21 years, but even if that were to happen he'd be unlikely to survive a year on the outside. RE: TOTALLY OT, but proud mummy needs your help!!
So, we found out last night that she didn't win. :( We are dying to know who took her crown, and will find out like the rest of Australia - by watching the Today Show tomorrow morning. In retrospect, it is probably a good thing anyways, as there are ethical reasons (have a read about the Nestle Boycott here: http://www.babymilkaction.org/pages/boycott.html ) that I am not sure I would be happy about setting aside so that her little face could promote a product made by Nestle. I don't know enough about the boycott or the reasons behind it to be able to decide definitively if I personally support it or not, but even so, was/am a little apprehensive about her promoting the brand. The $10k sure would have been nice though; we had planned on taking the kids to visit the snow (which none of us have ever seen!), on a family holiday that we could never afford otherwise, so they are all a bit bummed. ...And Lolly's ego is pretty sad that she has to go to school and tell her friends that she didn't win. :) Thanks so much for your support everyone! That's really funny cause there was a big hoo-ha last week about Naomi Campbell and racial stereotypes and somebody in the media making a reference (in America) about her not being able to be cast as The Milky Bar Kid, so I had thought that it must be in the US too. RE: I am leaving Pentax because it limits me...
I'm in a big rush, but I'd just like to add that I just won two silver distinctions and a silver award at the Australian Professional Photography Awards, with nothing other than my K-7! :) I tell you what, Pentax Australia is finally taking a bit of notice of me now, and I even had a nice long chat with the marketing department and CEO of CR Kennedy at PMA on the weekend. In all honesty, I *have* struggled in the past months due to the sensor noise that I have in low light conditions, but I have two *very* cheap K-5s on their way to me (thanks for listening CR Kennedy!), and I think I will be up to scratch then! You can see my award shots here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150241867583840.339602.256694448839 I have to tell you that I certainly did gloat a bit when a very well known AIPP Grand-Master (a professional of 40 years experience) who has been mentoring me for the awards and who shoots with a 5D MkIII, only went home with two silvers! Bwahahaha! And here's me, my first awards, and shot with only my trusty little K-7 and AF50mm/f1.7, beating him (and lots of others) in the awards stakes! Woohoo! t.x. -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Timber Sent: Friday, 1 July 2011 6:00 AM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: I am leaving Pentax because it limits me... Before you flame on me, no I am not. I will stay with my loved white Kr, and maybe a K5 update later... But how many times I heard this from friends... countless. Most of the time the reason is: Pentax is not good for studio photography. I was not aware of Benjikan (or Benjamin Kanarek) until recently a friend of mine directed me to his page. (FYI: http://www.benjaminkanarek.com/ ) So I now always ask my friends when they say Pentax is not good enough for studio: You think his photographs are not good enough? You already reached his level and you feel it's not enough for you? Obviously... the answer is no :D But to be honest I had some hesitations sometimes as well... I love Sony's new system, for not having a blacked VF during the photos and most importantly, videos. But is it really that important? Well... no. But which other company offers you the possibility to try the astrophotography for a low price of £200ish? Or has a grip so comfortable that you don't really want to use a battery grip to make the use of the camera comfortable? But on the other end there are limits for sure. Not having most of the 3rd party companies support for P-TTL (YangNuo, Phottix...) is one of the main concerns, but apart from that... I am still in love with Pentax :) So, yes... Sony A55 and Nikon D5100 are really tempting for me giving a bit more options, but I believe my little Pentax Kr is a very good partner for my photography needs. Why did I write this? Well... I just had to tell you this and we read so many rants then why not a praise? :) Regards, .t -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Brand new K-7 anyone? Going cheeeeeeeeeap!
Hey guys, Just wondering if anyone is interested in a brand new (demo model, with warranty) K-7 body? Not sure of the exact price just yet, but it will be below cost. I was just contacted by CR Kennedy here in Brisbane asking if I'd be interested. I was very tempted, but have decided not to as K-5s are the only bodies that I want to add to my collection at present. However, I am sure that they would be very happy if I could find a buyer for them. Send me an email off list to t...@lovebytes.com.au if you think that buyer might be you! RE: Damaged images
Eric, throw your card away now before you get a whole lot of heartache from it! I had that exact thing happen to me with the Microdrive that I was using in my *istD a few years back and lost two complete commercial shoots. I had to do a mass panic ring around and download a gazillion data recovery programs who couldn't retrieve anything. The best quote I got was around the $4k mark and it involved sending the card overseas to a lab that uses microscopes and lasers to try and retrieve the lost data. Needless to say, I still have the card sitting here as a reminder, and had to do two reshoots. Cost me a bundle in the end in lost time/extra talent costs etc, and many nights of lost sleep as I kept remembering all of the gorgeous shots that I just knew were sitting on the card right in front of me. Your card is on its way out, throw it out before it breaks your heart, I reckon! Still to confirm a national distributor, but they will also be available from our website at www.theconstellationsproject.com.au . I've been following her blog for ages: http://milasdaydreams.blogspot.com/ She used to post one of those images almost daily, but now as she realised what a huge following she was getting, she stopped posting her images and has signed a book deal to publish them instead. RE: OT: Thoughts with Queenslanders (TC Yasi)
Hey everyone! I am here and safe and well! We are at least 9 hours drive away from the cyclone thus far. My kids Dad on the other hand, lives directly in its path, and I am thanking the Gods the kids are now back safely with me as they just spent the last 4 weeks with him! Project flood photos went well, and I've done two return trips and another planned for tomorrow. It is all coming together really well, just still trying to source a distributor, but the artwork is looking great and website should be up very soon... Can't show you any images just yet, they are all under wraps for now... On a personal note, it was SO hard returning home, I just didn't want to leave them out there. :( I wanted to pack everyone in my car and bring them home for a big home cooked meal. I can't begin to explain the devastation. The worst part is that people like us can go out there, help out and return to nice comfy homes. Even the Army only goes out there for 7 days at a time and then is replaced by a fresh unit, so that they can have a break. But the families, are living it 24/7 and don't get any respite. It is a sad, eerie, haunting place out there I have had a hard time tolerating my own kids since returning - their squabbles just seem so trivial compared to what the Grantham kids are dealing with. I keep getting so short tempered with them as I compare their lives with the kids out there... :( There were 5 funerals this week, 3 of which were kids less than 6 years old. On Monday, they laid to rest a family of two kids, and their mum, leaving only their Dad and one other sibling surviving, both of whom witnessed the rest of their family drown. Such a sad time for them... Anyways, I am safe and well, just up to my neck with editing and preparing for the big AIPP event this weekend (http://www.hotd.aippblog.com/)... Thanks so much for all of your concerns, it is nice to feel luurved! :) Tan.x. -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of P. J. Yeah - I don't know what the Queenslanders have done to anger the weather gods but, after this hits, virtually the whole state will have suffered some sort of major flooding and storm damage in the last month. Apart from the wind strength, the cyclone is expected to cross the coast coinciding with high tide. I'm not aware of any PDMLers directly in the path of Yasi - both John and Tan are well south. wish me luck!
Ok, so I don't know how I've pulled this off, but in the past four days I have managed to put together a huge project for the Flood Appeal. Tomorrow, I am going, under police/government escort to a little town called Grantham. I use the term town loosely as there is nothing left of it now. :( It is the spot where over 10 lives were lost and there are still about 8 missing. It is currently a crime scene and even the towns folk are only allowed limited access. From 6am tomorrow (Saturday), until 6pm Sunday night, I will be there, K-7s in tow, photographing the scene and its people for a calendar that I am designing. Don't ask me how but I have endorsement from the AIPP, Pentax Australia and Qld Premier Anna Bligh, all of whom will be providing a Foreward and logos etc for Inclusion in the calendar. We have an initial print run happening of 10,000, and the Premier's office itself is paying for the printing! It is going to be distributed to every Newsagent in the country and possibly into Myer and Target department stores too. There was a meeting last night of the Qld Council of the AIPP, where they elected to allow me to wear official AIPP attire, reserved usually only for officials and judges at the National Awards etc. Apparently, all of those at the meeting were chomping at the bit wishing that they were in my shoes. The Chairperson even exclaimed in astonishment How the fuck did she manage to get in there?! To which a highly respected photographer, who for some reason has taken me under his wing this past few months replied, Because she has BALLS, and she is a tenacious little thing too!(He told me this story when I went to his studio to collect the uniform today). Exciting stuff, but to say that I am crapping myself is an understatement, this is BIG time. This could really make or break me! Wish me luck! Oh, and did I mention that I managed to get a rather nice lens on loan from CR Kennedy for the expedition too? RE: Brisbane Floods
We are about 9kms from the nearest spot shown on those maps, which is Milton. The closest flooding to us was probably in Herston/Bowen Hills, but there aren't any pics of it in this collection. My husband works in Bowen Hills at the hospital which was our main cause for concern as our car was parked in an area notorious for flooding after any normal storm/rain. Probably the closest image to his workplace is the one of the Albion Park Raceway, which is about 2km away from the hospital. On the image, the hospital is a bit to the left and below what is shown. Our house, thankfully was high and dry, but oh, wow, you should see the mess over on the Southside. We have been over to assist with volunteering in the Goodna/Ipswich area these past few days and it is heartbreaking, and the stench is unbearable. We are so blessed not to be living in that right now! John - the thing about yours was (only in terms of understanding how bad the flooding was) that if you didn't know what the area looked like before - you couldn't tell (in some of them) just how deep the water was or how much wider a river was than before... the breaking of the river walk , therefore, stood out strongly as one of the best of the photos to get the story across. ann -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Brian Walters Sent: Friday, 14 January 2011 3:46 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: Brisbane Floods Thanks John, First hand news is always the best.
