John, I've used ME Super, MZ-6, *istD, a little bit MZ-S and PZ-1
and I find K10D to be the quietest shutter among all of the above.

Mine definitely has a deeper more cavenous sound, to me it seems more
intrusive than the *ist D, I first noticed it shooting at 1/100 sec, maybe
I'm hearing SR doing it's job at the same time. Don't get me wrong it doesn't
have the slap of a KX or anything near it, but I find it distracting.

Or maybe I've got a particularly quiet *ist D, it has less than 5k shutter
releases, or a particularly noisy K10D!

I agree that the K10D is quieter than the D. I can tell by how many
times I get caught shooting pics in coffee shops:-). But when I want to
be really hushed, I pull out my Leica iiif RD. It's even quiet for a
Leica, as it was apparently lubed generously at its last CLS. I've used

 Funny man.
I have my email archived back to June 1999.
I've never used the word sneeze in an email to the PDML.

Bless you.

The *ist D has a very pleasant sound IMO - that is as long as you

your ear very close to the camera body

I've never used the word sneeze in an email to the PDML.

 My apologies.

It's funny, I checked the archives, and the term sneezing hamster seems to
have entered the PDML lexicon through the back door. I couldn't find an
original message where it was used the first time, it showed up in a post in
2002 attributed to someone other than the person writing the post.

I agree that the K10D is quieter than the D. I can tell by how many

Leica, as it was apparently lubed generously at its last CLS. I've used
it at piano recitals. That's quiet.

My one and only resturant shot was taken one day with bunny ears and

Yashica-Mat on table, rough aim and infinity focused. Barly heard the

Strange, maybe I just perceive it as louder, it seems more intrusive.
  Having
said that, most of my shots have been at slow shutter speeds with SR
  enabled.

Or maybe I've got a particularly quiet *ist D, it has less than 5k
  shutter
releases, or a particularly noisy K10D!

I just triggered my *istD K10D beside each other and the D is
  somewhat noisier.

  Cheers,
