That's the one.

I bought one and a 24-90 at the same time a few years
ago, and shot one roll of slides with each (remember
slides???). The 24-90 was clearly better in contrast,
sharpness, and light fall-off (not to mention the
extra 4mm at the wide end), so I returned the 28-70.

Yep, this is the one with element seperation issues. It's the main
reason I haven't tried to get one of the ones Henry's has on the shelf
at the main store in TO.

Yep, you've got it. Elements don't just separate from each other. The
rear aspheric element is a composite made from a ground glass portion
and a molded optical glass portion, it's this element that breaks down
and separates. Too bad as otherwise this is a wonderful lens. I
understand that Pentax is now able to repair these but I haven't gotten
around to sending my sample in.

Funny you should mention that: I was just at a local camera shop
yesterday and noticed that they had a couple of these lenses, new and
boxed, on the shelf. I was thinking that when/if they sell, these
lenses would be under warranty and Pentax would be obliged to repair
them if they experience the separation problem.

You embarrass me, as I have an otherwise perfect one that needs
attention, and Pentax said Send it in.
So far, I haven't.
I think I'll hang up a big Post-It note and follow up this week yet!
