David, it's the rubber grip you roll back, not the ring itself: on my copy, it's quite flexible, although I had to use a tiny screwdriver to lift the edge to get a start on it. I have been told a number of times, that the focus slackness can be tightened by turning 3-4 screws under a piece of rubber. I have yet to find this peice of rubber that can be rolled back to expose the screws. Does anyone have a picture of said rubber piece rolled back. The 50-200 is a solid little lens. The 70-210 f4 is far better built. It will probably have to be it - but it is going to be a bit bigger for that zoom range. I'd like to see around 50-150/4 or so - constant aperture and high quality. I'll probably have to consider the DA*50-135/2.8 and/or the DA*60-250/4. We'll see what the prices are like. -- Best regards, Bruce Sunday, January 14, 2007, 7:17:40 PM, you wrote: ME> I guess I missed that one in the roadmap. Hi Francis I was quite surprised that the test animal portrait photos I took at 300mm with the Sigma AF 70-300mm zoom where quite good regarding sharpness. And nobody seems to like cheap Sigma zooms :-) I got that zoom in a bundle with an AF 400FTZ and a body and will probably sell it later when the Pentax lens dryness on auctions here continues. It looks like people buy everything with a K mount at the moment. On the other side the AF400FTZ seems to overexpose up to 2 stops with ISO 400 Kodak UC film in bright daylight on TTL on my SFXn film camera and a distance of about 2 meters with a middle grey! haired dog. At 5 meters everything looks fine again. This list seems to prefer fast premium quality lenses despite the shortcomings :-) greetings Markus -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of John Francis Sent: Sunday, January 14, 2007 7:53 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: quick report: A 70-210 F4 on *ist-Ds On Sun, Jan 14, 2007 at 12:08:17PM +0100, Thibouille wrote: > I do not see any build quality on my particuliar DA 50-200. > It feels certainly beter built than ma DA 18-55. You're right. the DA 50-200 a good lens. However, it doesn't have quite as good a feel as the DA 16-45, and it's quite a bit short of the excellent build quality of the DA 12-24. The FA* lens performed a little better, but not that > much. ...which is to be expected, of course, when comparing a zoom with an F* prime... (The above quote is a strong compliment for the A 70-210/4.) My overall favorite, of the few 80-200 and 70-210 Pentax zooms I have used, is in fact the A 70-210/4. (And, I have a LN- copy of the sometimes-touted F 70-201/4-5.6, if anyone's interested...) My impression of the M 80-200/4.5 is that it is also a really good zoom, but it is not ~better~ than the A 70-210/4, and it lacks the (sometimes useful) A electrical contacts and the wider zoom range (70-210, at 3:1, is distinctly wider than 80-210, at 2.5:1). I did not find the F 70-201/4-5.6 to be better than the A 70-210/4, and its variable (and mostly smaller, except at 70mm) aperture does not fit my shooting style. Of course, AF is important to some... Fred

Charles Wilson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> asked: > Can any one advise how this lens operates on an ist D. Are there any better > options. Hello Charles, I've tested it on my *ist D but I did no side by side comparison with any other zoom lens, just a quick comparison with the FA 85/1.4 (at 85mm, of course...). The FA* lens performed a little better, but not that much. If you are looking at a affordable, non AF lens with constant aperture in this zooming range I guess it may be the right choice. I do also own the M 80-200/4.5, a really good performer, at least on film (it is smaller - not much, but enough - and lighter). I didn't try it on the *ist D, though, so cannot comment. SMC A 70-210 f4 tip
Hi there Don't know if this is a common problem or a well-known solution but here goes: My A70~210 f4 was getting loose on the zoom / focus ring. Although the mechanism itself was nice and tight, the ring wobbled. After a little investigation I found that the ring is held to the lens mechanism by a metal ring about 3mm wide, fastened with four small (hobby-screwdriver size) Philips screws. This ring resides beneath the grip rubber at the camera end of the zoom / focus ring. There is no need to remove the rubber grip, simply peel back a few mm at this end. Tighten the screws (maybe add a smidgen of thread locker) and the lens is as good as new. Apologies if this is common knowledge but it saved me a trip to the repairer so it may help someone out there! Regards Jim Brooks E-MAILS are susceptible to interference.
