It's called the Pacific Ocean.

Lets see, Toyota is a Japanese company. They decide to build a new
sports car. They have an outside design house, (either in Califonia or
Itally), design the car body. They design most of but not all of the
mechanical systems and use mostly off the shelf Delco parts for the
electrical system. They buy parts from other manufactures from Detroit
to Guangzhou, have the parts shipped to Tennessee, to be assembled at a
United Motors Company factory, (an independent company that's joint
venture with General Motors). They then sell this car at a Toyota
Dealership in Canada. Is it an American made car or Japanese? Can you
really call Toyota the Manufacture, they're certainly more than a
marketer. What if GM sells the car in Canada, is it then an American
Car? GM owns Delco, which is responsible for most of the electrical
system after all, are they just a marketer, they own 1/2 the factory
where it was built. What if the idea of the car started with GM and they
asked Toyota to design the mechanicals and hire the outside design
house, is GM just a marketer or the manufature the car, or is their
relationship something else?

Canon 5D MKII video

2008-09-24 Thread Brendan MacRae
JIC nobody posted the finished video:

http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2008/09/22/without-further-ado-reverie/

Looks good, especially for someone who's never shot a
video before. There are some white balance problems
and the shot of the Empire State building seems to go
dark like the camera had some kind of Auto-Exposure
happening while running (this also happens right at
the very end of the shot of the guy exiting the car
and running into the focus area, look closely). But
overall, beautiful work. Of course how the camera
handles sync-sound is something altogether other than
else. I also wonder how long a scene at 30FPS the
buffer can handle. He doesn't show anything
undercranked or overcranked either, does it only do
30FPS? If so that's really limiting. But for short MOS
stuff like this...wowsers!

A friend tells me that the RED people are also working
on an DSLR.

Yeah, looks good.

They hired from the same helicopter company in NY that I did, I

Good technical effort.

Clever way to handle the TV flicker on the
actor...nice touch. One big problem you can see from
this footage is relying on the LCD live-view for
framing and focus. What the camera would need is some
kind of LCD adapter that is very bright and marked
with frame lines that includes a safe area for booms,
lights, etc.

I can forsee an entirely new aftermarket for
manufacturers to build video kits for this camera to
work around those limitations.

I'm not so sure.

I understand why 'Explorer of Light' Vincent Laforet made the film - and
many will see some applications, but there are logistical problems with
using such a small camera for most broadcast and corporate applications.
It is much easier to buy purpose-made kit that has ancillary support
built in already. Having said that, rules are there to be broken and
there is no doubt the video looks great.

Filmmakers would be better advised in coming up with decent stories that
attract attention ;)

Well, it's just a guess...;-)

I remember when Sony came out with the VX1000 DV
camcorder and within months there were companies who
were making balanced XLR input boxes that pluged into
the camera's single stereo mini jack. So, you never
know.

Totally agree. The camera's compactness would actually
be a hindrance in many instances. Besides, photogs
aren't going to suddenly become videographers in big
numbers simply because the have a quiver full of
compatible lenses.

I see the main market for this sort of thing for pro's being PJ's and
the like who want/need to do video on the side but for whom stills are
the prime consideration. If you're doing pro video, you buy pro video
kit, not a still camera with video capability.
