Hi Charles,

The knob next to the display obviously indicates which AF mode the camera is in 
in absolute terms. The designation next to the focus frame displays AF.S, AF.C 
or M depending on the position of the Focus mode switch at the next to the lens 
mount. If you haven't moved the focus point using the joy-stick selector then 
it will likely be set to the middle location like the single spot focus mode.

The manual has a diagram of the rear LCD on page 15 and a full explanation 
regarding focus point selection on page 74. The manual is available as a PDF 
document from
