Christine's new Epson R2880

2008-08-05 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Everyone:

Life just got really busy, so I'll be in & out of PDML, but I did want to
mention I just got my new Epson R2880 with some Premium Luster paper & some
5x7 glossy. I've printed up a flurry of prints, so here are my impressions:

1) Wow! This is really the 1st time I've ever seen my prints done on a
quality printer & it should be said I don't have a lot of experience with
printing or color theory or management, but I'm not blind, & this thing
prints great. The black & white really pops. Also, the articulation
between monitor & printer appears, so far, to be virtually the same. In
Lightroom 1.4, my color management is Profile:  Stylus Photo R2880;
Rendering Intent: Perceptual; 300 ppi, Print Sharpening: High; & that seems
to be working just fine so far.

2) The machine itself is as quiet as a church mouse when printing. As
reported, the R2880 is just a tad slower than the Epson R2400, but I never
really had a fast printer (other than my little HP document printer), so I
really don't notice the slower speed, and the quality is so good, I don't
really mind. Set-up was very easy, but before the printer arrived I had
downloaded the User Guide & read it from cover to cover, so I knew what I
had to do once the printer arrived.

3) I had every intention of buying the R2400 & was just about to click it
into my shopping cart, but Amazon alerted me to the R2880 for a lot less. I
put the R2880 into my shopping cart, then I dashed about the net reading
reviews & forums, then about 3 hours later, I decided to go with the newer
technology--so far I'm glad I did. Hope it stays that way! :-)

4) The prints need to dry for 15 minutes & the dye cure for 24 hours, as the
literature states, and this is good advice. I was just a tad concerned
about what I was seeing (color & brightness, but I was also getting
tired--of course, I was up until the wee hours having a wee lot of fun
printing a whole lotta prints), but the following morning, the prints look
great--and I'm seeing detail in the prints that I missed on the monitor.
Kind of fun to discover tiny new details--though in one print some very
slight cloning boo-boos showed up that I hadn't really noticed on the
monitor. :-)

5) Sharing pictures on the web has been a lot of fun--a kind of fun I'll
gladly continue, but for me photography has always been about the print, and
now I feel complete. Already, I can tell that my approach to making an
image has changed--I'll be shooting for the print. I want to experiment
with all sorts of papers (as you'd expect) & sizes & matting & framing etc.
I've always wanted to get to the point where I might see an image and shoot
for size, paper, matting, & framing. Hopefully, I can now begin to
cultivate that kind of photographic eye!

Cheers, Christine

Now for the important question -
how much did it cost?
how much are the inks? :):)

Christmas has been cancelled for the rest of my natural life! ;-) Seriously
though, I knew what I was getting into, and I've made peace with the
oncoming costs. Ann: Outstanding Diner GESO by the way. Your diner series
reminded me of William Least Heat Moon's travel book called Blue Highways.
He traveled around in the US in a van & had a funny way of rating diners.
Worth a read if you haven't already had the pleasure. It's smartly written
& there are some very nice portraits of the people he met. I'm currently
reading Pat Henry's book "By the Grace of the Sea" about a singlehandler
sailor & her sail around the world. Not on photograph to be found in the
book, but it's interesting none the less. Anyway, great GESO & the very
best for your show.

Cheers, Christine

$720-799 for the printer.

9 ink cartridges, each $11.20 (atlex.com price). They supposedly
contain about 11ml of ink and the R2880 is reputed to be slightly more
efficient on ink consumption compared to the R2400, which cartridges
are supposed to have 12ml of ink.

Christine: it's good to hear you're happy with the R2880. I felt the
same way when I got the R2400 ... it's been a fantastic printer and to
me the photograph is almost always realized, finally, in the print.
Web photos are just easy to send around but don't compare at all.

Try some of the Epson Exhibition Fine Art paper or Velvet Fine Art.
They are just plain fantastic papers. Hahnemühle, Crane and Ilford
also have some fantastic papers. One of my favorites ... and seemingly
hard to come by now ... is Somerset Velvet. I hate putting it under
glass ... it just feels so nice in the hand.

Godfrey,

If you want to try a spectacular paper, try the new Harmon Gloss Fb
Al. It's a Baryta-based paper with a look VERY close to air-dried
glossy fibre Ilford Galerie silver-gelatin paper.

I guess I won't be getting THAT printer! ... I actually am very happy
with the prints the R220 does, but
I cant print anything biger than 8 1/2 x 11 - well, 8 1/2 x anything
,actually... I'd like a printer with a wider
carriage. although getting prints through smugmug is fine on one level,
I'd much rather do my own.

thanks for your comments about the diner stuff... I know about Blue
Highways - I hardly read anything anymore
in book form and I'm obliged to read two books by friends before I read
anything else

Ann, who wishes everything were published in large print editions!

I'm more of a Matte finish guy, but based on the comparison prints I
made at the shop a few weeks ago, the Harmon Gloss Fb and Exhibition
Fine Art papers were virtually indistinguishable.

I bought two boxes of the Epson paper to experiment with. Now I'm just
waiting until my Matte Black ink cart needs to be replaced as it is
recommended to use the Photo Black ink with it for best results. I've
not yet put Photo Black ink into the R2400 ... and I've owned it since
October 2005!

I can kind of answer that.

There are at least two types of Ilford Pearl

Classic Pearl and Classic Gloss are for dye based inks only

Smooth Pearl and Smooth Gloss are for pigment based ink, but you might
also use dye based. Check the box or web site.

Also, Ilford does have profiles for their papers and popular printers
on their website.

See you later, gs

I think Ann was asking about Ilford Pearl darkroom paper, and the
closest paper to that is the Harman Glossy FB paper is is closer to a
Pearl or Luster surface than a RC glossy (Harmon is the same company
as Ilford Photo which makes the Ilford darkroom materials. Ilford
inkjet paper is made by a different, now unrelated company)

I cant' work in the darkroom anymore - I didn't know about Ilford making

Are my epson inks dye based or pigment? I don't even know that. the

Dye based inks, not pigments.

I sometimes switch out the black cartridge more than twice in a
single day :-). Half empty cartridges save nicely in ziploc plastic
sandwich bags.

Is there an Epson 2400 icc profile available for the Harmon paper?

Yes, but 5-6% of the ink is wasted on every swap. I'm cheap. ;-)

Godfrey

Thanks, Godfrey--& everyone else--for the paper suggestions. I'm very
eager to try that Velvet Fine Art for sure! Life sure got a bit more
exciting. I'm about to burst with joy. Wishing everyone happy printing ;-)
Cheers, Christine

The print is the thing. And making your own prints is an absolute
joy. I would probably quite shooting if I couldn't print.
Enjoy.
