Contax filters?

2002-03-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Can anyone speak to the optical quality of Contax filters? I would think the their T*
coating would match Pentax's SMC in glare control.

I'm shopping for a 67mm multicoated UV filter, and at $32 (B&H), Contax is
attractively priced; Pentax is $55, B+W $45, and Heliopan (from elesewhere) $47.

I've not used Contax filters, Paul, but I have compared results with a
Contax T*85/1.4 and the Pentax A*85/1.4, and the results were very
similar. I'd say that the Contax filter would be a good choice based on
price and the glass. However, I'm unsure as to how the filters would
compare with the Pentax SMC filters.

Re: Contax filters?

2002-03-28 Thread Bob Walkden

Hi,

I use Contax filters on all my Carl Zeiss lenses. They're very good,
and very well made. Apparently they're made by Hoya, but they are very
different, and much better, than Hoya's own-brand products. I'd rate
them better than B+W, but that's a subjective rating. There is no
noticeable degradation of the optical quality of the CZ lenses.

Caveat, otherwise somebody will tell me that under a scanning electron
microscope any blind fool can really spot the difference and therefore
all filters are crap: no noticeable degradation means when I look at
slides on a light table with a 4X Schneider lupe or an 8X no-brand lupe,
or when I've seen the slides projected to about 1.5m on the long edge
through a Leitz enlarger & lens onto a high quality screen.

I've never used Pentax filters, so I can't tell you if their flare
resistance is as good. When I used Pentax lenses I was using B+W
filters. I can tell you that I get more problems with flare with the
CZ lenses than I ever got with Pentax SMC lenses, but I only get flare
when the sun is actually in the frame, so it's not a major problem.
