In the Netherlands we also use dia instead of slide.
dias (plural)
diafilm
diaprojector
etc.

I knew a slide is a positive of course, but I had never heard it with a

I seem to recall that was the word used when I lived in Germany,
too. FWIW. Just Dia though, without the Postitive on the end.

Same here in Estonia (diapositiiv in estonian language). Last ten
years or so, english slide (slaid in estonian) have been more and
more popular. Fresher photographers, of course, don't understand either

Re: Diapositive

2007-10-24 Thread Thibouille
It is the french word for slides.

Dia means through in ancient greek if I'm not mistaken so a
diapossitive is a positive you look at by projecting a light source
through it. In fact you look at the image produced on a support (I
know you know that ;).

Learning all the time ;-)

I believe the word was explained here in a not too distant past, when
some (other) Norwegian referred to his slides as dias, and most people
didn't understand what he was talking about. The term diapositive, or
more often just dia for short, is quite common around here. It's also
the usual word for (photographic) slide in German, I think

It's apparently less frequently used in English, but still included in
my Oxford Concise dictionary, and I also found it here:

http://www.chambersharrap.co.uk/chambers/features/chref/chref.py/main?query=diapositive
I knew a slide is a positive of course, but I had never heard it with a dia-
prefix. Something to keep in mind for Scrabble.

In French diapo is the word for 'slide'. It's always been printed on

Usuakky we use in french 'dia' or 'diapo' rather than the entire word
