Dos PESOs - the Arkansas Travler

2019-11-19 Thread John
First up is a lesson that if you can't get a fast enough shutter speed to hand
hold it, GO BACK TO THE CAR AND GET THE DAMN TRIPOD. There's just too much
noise. FWIW, it looks great on the back of the camera.

I'm extremely disappointed that I traveled almost 900 miles and blew the shot!:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/49091101082

The second shot was taken with flash & I'm reasonably pleased with it:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/49090897656

This was taken with a flaky Vivitar 285HV. All of my Pentax flashes appear to be
dead now. And since all of them are OLD, none will be covered by warranty.

Is there any place I can send them that will actually repair them? Or should I
just trash them & replace?

Methinks the crowd barrier is far more annoying than the noise. But what

They wouldn't have let me move the crowd barrier (or go past it). Probably would
have gotten locked up and then I wouldn't have gotten ANY photos.

Technically, I wasn't supposed to be there after dark, but I talked to the
security guy and told him I'd driven 20 hours to get there & he let me wander
around and take photos.

Couldn't do anything about the security barrier, but the noise I could have
avoided if I hadn't been to lazy (tired) to go back to the car and get the tripod.

Unusual for them all to be completely dead. You can recondition capacitors by
setting to manual, then charging and discharging repeatedly. Might take some
time to charge the first few cycles.

I killed one of them by leaving batteries in it too long & they leaked.

The other two were stored without batteries. When I put batteries in them they
won't turn on at all. I'm sure I did something wrong with them as well.

Do they whine at all? Still might be worth leaving them switched on for 15-30
minutes. Battery corrosion can be dealt with, unless it has actually dissolved
parts.

No need to do anything wrong there. They can very well take care of
killing themselves.

Electronic flashes contain electrolytic capacitors - as reservoirs for
the flash energy and as parts of the oscillator to generate the high
voltage for the flash tube - which lose their capacity if they're left
without voltage applied to them for longer periods of time. Some of this
loss is reversible by applying voltage to them.

Give them fresh batteries, switch them on and wait a few hours. Then
switch them off and on again and with a bit of luck the odcillator will
start with its usual whining sound. If it doesn't you've probably lost
since the repair cost might well be higher than buying a new flash.

In an earlier life, I've spent parts of my summer school holidays at the
Multiblitz factory, selecting pairs of electrolytic capacitors so that
they had the desired capacity.

I didn't have time to clean the battery leakage when I found it; just removed
the batteries & brushed out the surface gunk so it wouldn't get any worse.

That's what prompted me to check the other two.

No batteries inside, so I put fresh ones in to check them. They don't do
anything when I turn them on, no charging whine, no nothing. Tried with a
different set of batteries from a different pack. Still no response.

I'll give the "turn it on & let it sit for 30 minutes" later today & see if that
works, but I'm pretty sure I've effed them up beyond my ability to fix them.

"First Impression" is 1/125th second at F/8, ISO 800, Vivitar 285HV flash set to
yellow.

"Big_Boy_OWL" is 1/60th second at f/11, ISO 102400.

I want to cry every time I look at it. I should have gone back to the car and
got my tripod.

For those who are not familiar, "OWL" is O. Winston Link, one of the true gods
of night rail photography.

They aren't worth repair, unfortunately, unless you're willing and able
to do the work yourself.  Last time I priced a used 280T it was
something like 20 dollars.  The minimum repair cost of a more modern
flash is about 300 and right now KEH.com has a AF540FGZ for about
$140.00. Repair simply isn't worth the money.

Get an old fashioned pencil with an eraser.  Clean the battery contacts
by rubbing them with the eraser.  Then try a nice fresh set of
batteries.  That might work.
