Eggleston

2013-03-08 Thread Derby Chang

Got myself into the opening of a new show at the Museum of Contemporary
Art. William Eggleston, along with another photographer, Laurence
Aberhart, and painter, Noel McKenna. I know Eggleston not in high regard
on this list, but I do give him respect. There is a video by Eggleston
playing in a separate room (with a parental guidance warning) that has
shifted my view about him. Very Robert Frank. Worth seeing if you are in
Sydney.

their champagne pouring)

Re: Eggleston

2013-03-08 Thread David Parsons
I saw a copy of his tricycle picture when Bank of America had an
exhibit at the MFA in Boston, and it really is much different
enlarged, rather than how you normally see it online or in small
books.

I don't like all of his work, but I respect his viewpoint and his use
of color photography and mundane items in artistic ways.

Use caution, Derbs. One does not simply admire Eggleston on the PDML.

the pre-show shots were more compelling; the last one very
Egglestonesque indeed.

Side note, to my great surprise the town of Livingston has an excellent
Indian restaurant, Punjab sweets and restaurant. Much better than I'd
ever expect of a Central California farm town of 13,000 that could be
described as a suburb of Turlock.

I want to say "William Eggleston's Guide" includes that photo, also
called "Greenwood, Mississippi 1973" and it's almost certainly in
"Democratic Camera."

Those are the two I'd start with.

There's a link to alibris on my blog, http://www.drivingtheflies.com and

My bad on the Guide. Seems even though the photo was in his MoMA show,
that photo and several others were excluded from Guide on the basis of
being too strong; apparently it was thought they'd overpower the rest of

"The movie "By The Ways", written and directed by Vincent Gérard and
Cédric Laty (Lamplighter Films, 2005) is now available on DVD thanks to
Agnès B. DVD and Potemkine.

With William Eggleston, Winston Eggleston, Rosalind Solomon, Maud

I've had this in my Netflix queue for months. Mybe it will finally get

Call it whatever you want, Tom. I haven't showed up to meet many
photographers and found them passed out in the bushes and locked out of
their own houses because they refuse to carry a house key.

But maybe that's just me.

NYTimes: William Eggleston, the Pioneer of Color Photography

2016-10-20 Thread Stan Halpin
If my memory serves me correctly, during the Great Chicago PDML Meet-up And
Exhibition of 2010, many of us saw an exhibition of Eggleston's work. Link here
to a interview with, story about the man...

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/17/t-magazine/william-eggleston-photographer-interview-augusten-burroughs.html?smprod=nytcore-ipad&smid=nytcore-ipad-share

A visit with the artist reveals him to be every bit as brilliant, confounding
and heartbreakingly soulful as the pictures he makes.

Of course you must add "In The Art World" to that title for it not to
sound absurdly hyperbolic.

Thanks for posting that, Stan. I remember the exhibition fondly. Never quite
understood Eggleston before, but the exhibition was an eye-opener.

interesting site. Not particularly weird though.

On the subject of stamps, people might be interested to know that the
Royal Mail (=British postal service) is bringing out a set of stamps
on 13 February featuring photographs of animals by Magnum
photographers, including: Erwitt (of course), HCB, Martine Franck,
Richard Kalvar, Ferdinand Scianna and Jean Gaumy. If you buy the first
day cover it will be franked with a paw-print postmark from the town
of Petts Wood in Kent.
