Re: FA100/2.8 Vs DFA100/2.8

2009-11-10 Thread Tom Cakalic
With the FA/100 can't remember using the limiter, always focusing
manually when shooting closeups and as a telephoto I havene't
experienced any flare issues as the front element is so deeply
recessed in the body of the lens.

I use it all the time on mine but that's because I tend to use it as a
general purpose 100mm lens. If the AF gets lost the limiter becomes
quite handy.

Re: FA100/2.8 Vs DFA100/2.8

2009-11-07 Thread Bob Sullivan
Leon,
I've purchased a DFA100/2.8 this year, after seeing Mark Cassino using one.
I like the image quality in comparison to the A100/2.8 Marco.
I've not noticed any drop in quality.
The lens is lighter and the autofocus with touch-up is a blessing.
The focusing accuracy with the K-7 is sharp.
North American ebay has them periodically from a Canadian firm.
Regards, Bob S.

There is one on eBay Germany about every other month and usually in
very good condition. They go around €330 to 380. Hope that helps.

I think I have only once used the limiter on the FA so I'm unlikely to
miss the feature.

My 100 Macro is probably my most abused lens. 95% of pictures taken
with it have the front element inches away from salt water (I tried
the DFA 50 for a while but the working distance is just not enough and
you only dip the end of a lens in sea water once), it gets hit with
salt spray, rained on, put down on rocks and various other abuses and
looks and works as good as the day I bought it about 7 years ago.

Mmm, writing that maybe I should be shopping for a second FA rather
than considering a DFA.

The image quality sounds good, I'm going to have to consider the build
quality and see if I can get a really good look at one to see how much
rain and salt spray can get into the various gaps in the lens (I said
I wanted a weather sealed version).

Thanks for the comments so far everyone.

I have the DFA 100 and like it a lot; I don't find the build too weak
- mind you, macro lenses don't get banged around as much as DA* zooms
which are built to take some abuse and AF hunting on the K10D is an
issue only in low light so I am OK with not having a limiter plus I
can prefocus manually so the long travel of the helical focus doesn't
hurt me as much. And it doubles nicely as a portrait lens, too. IQ is
brilliant as far as I can tell and it tested as Pentax's best lens

My FA 100 is hit and miss on my K10D. I have been meaning to send it
in and the 77 to have them set up focus like i had to do for my DA F
50 2.8

Optical formula is different, as is rendering (coulours slightly
different), thanks to Tokina deisgn (yep DFA100 is a Tokina).
For what I could read the DFA100 is as good as the FA/F100 so Tokina
or not.. I wouldn't care at all.
DFA will bring QuickShift but plastic construction (and less weight).
Also, you WILL lose the focus limiter, there's none on the DFA :(

Subject: FA100/2.8 Vs DFA100/2.8

Hi All,

I currently have the FA100/2.8 Macro, and it's a great lens. It is
however large and built like a tank. The DFA100/2.8 macro is small
and light.

My question to any who have experience with these lenses is, if I go
for small and light over large and built like a tank am I going to
lose out on image quality or be disappointed by build quality?

Or does anyone know if Pentax is planning on upgrading their macro
lenses any time to include weather sealing? I'd really like a weather
sealed 100mm macro lens.

Hi Leon,
I don't have experience with the FA 100/2.8 specifically, but I am quite
familiar with it's predecessor, the A100/2.8. While the optical formula is
different, both lenses are of the FREE design. On the DSLR, my much loved
A100/2.8 Macro is somewhat plagued by flare off the sensor. I'd be concerned
that the FA might have the same problem as it does share the rear element
trait.
