Defenitely very sad we can't have K-serie lens with those little
contacts making them act like A-serie. A pity !

2007/2/12, Peter Lacus [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 Hi Thibouille,

Unsharp indeed but is very usable on my KX with BW like TriX if
stopped down a bit. Even wide open it has provided quite nice pics.
I didn't have time to test extensively on my D and even less so on my
  K10D. I will if possible.

sharpness is rather subjective quality and personally I will gladly
sacrifice some sharpness for better overall rendering. For example my
A50/1.4 delivers sharper images (at least at wider apertures) than my
M50/1.4 yet I much prefer M50/1.4 for its rendering (and partially also
for the better focusing feel and build quality). Basically what most
people perceive as sharpness is IMHO just higher local contrast. And
since everything comes at a price, increasing the sharpness you
 effectively lose smooth tonal gradations.

The utility of this lens is that on a K-line body it gives exactly in
the viewfinder the same image as your eyes so it is very easy to use:
one eye in the viewfinder, the other one checking what's happening
  around.

the same apply to a combination of a MX and M50/1.4 and needless to say,
 I enjoy it immensely.

 Cheers,

 Peter

Not to scare anybody, but there have been some reports of clouding of this
lens (perhaps I saw it here too), and Pentax said that they would look into
it. That was about one to one and a half months ago or so IIRC.
That might be the reason for the delay, but nothing more than a speculation.
If they would be reviewing anything, I would suppose that the production
might have been interrupted temporarily.
35mm Limited lenses have been selling very well despite of their price, and
I do not believe Pentax would discontinue them. If anything, while they are
switching their lens line to non-lead and DA's, these 3 Limited sisters
should be helping their lens sales.

I don't understand the fascination with the FA77. They're good
lenses, but if you're going to be using a DSLR I feel the DA70 is a
better choice. Having worked with both, I prefer the DA70.

The FA43 has no direct equivalent yet for the DSLRs, closest thing
for the DSLR format is the FA28/2.8 AL. I wish they'd make a DA28/2
Limited. I was tempted by the FA43 for a bit as I like the size and
finish of the lens, but the 40-43mm focal length just seems a bit too
'in between'. It's a little too long for a normal and a little too
short for a portrait tele. I was happy to find an FA28 ... it proves
a better choice and left money in the budget for a DA50-200.

In the end, it's all just equipment. I'm extremely happy with the
Pentax kit I've assembled: everything I'm now using suits my needs
very well and performs more than satisfactorily. My goal now is to
exploit what it can do to best advantage. To which end I really need

Re: FA77 - going out of production?

2007-02-07 Thread Igor Roshchin

I haven't owned either of the two, but the fact that the FA77 is faster
then the DA70 has been a big argument for me.
One of the reasons I am considering buying an FA77 or one of the 85's
is that in addition to being a nice portrait lens on digital,
it can be used as a FAST short-tele.

DA70, on the other hand, has the advantage of quick-shift focus.

In the ideal world (tm), where all physics law are still present,
thus, defining physical sizes of the lenses, I would want to have
the following lenses for a 1.5x-crop DSLR (all with quick shift focus):
12-50mm - f/~2.8-3.2|4
18|20-60|80mm - f/2.8
50mm - f/1.4 (I'd keep the FA but would add the quick-shift focus)
100mm - f/1.7-2.0 (+ 1:1 macro)
50|70|100-300mm f/4 or f/2.8-4
200 or 300 f/2.8
maybe something like 10-17, which I still haven't tried, - for fun.

(unlike majority on this list, I don't do as much wide-angle, so
I prefer a zoom on the wide-angle side.. Well, maybe 12|14 f/2.8 would
be hand as well.)

better choice.

To which end I really need
to be cracking today and tomorrow as I have submission deadlines to
 meet...

One of the reasons I am considering buying an FA77 or one of the 85's
is that in addition to being a nice portrait lens on digital,
it can be used as a FAST short-tele.

DA70, on the other hand, has the advantage of quick-shift focus. ...

The difference in maximum aperture between the two lenses is about
two-thirds of a stop. At maximum aperture, and including the focal
length difference, that amounts to a total of 2.5 inches difference
in acceptably sharp focus zone wide open at 10 foot distance.

Quickshift is worth much more to me than those small differences.
It's a judgement call, certainly, but I am generally exposing at f/4
at least anyway, even for portraits, to obtain enough DoF. :-)

I'm with you. I like the quick-shift focus, but I like speed better :)

LOL ... Well, there is *some* hope that Pentax will address making a
DA28/2 Limited in the future. ;-)

You wide angle shooters have had enough new toys :-)

It's time Pentax balanced out their lineup and released a DFA* 200mm f4
Macro, to replace the FA* version they boneheadedly discontinued before I
could afford it :-)

FA77 - going out of production?

2007-02-06 Thread Mike Hamilton
Well, I've put both of my FA Limiteds (77 and 43) on the auction
block. I figure I can make some money on at least the 77 (especially
since it's black... those seem to be popular), and probably make a
bit on the 43. I'm finally deciding that I'm not shooting film often
enough (I've got a roll in each of my film bodies that's been there
for months), and the likelihood of that increasing is quite slim. I
don't think I've ever actually used my FA77 on my film bodies!! :)

So I was checking Canadian online shops for price of DA primes (70,
mostly), and I see on the Camera Canada website that Pentax Canada
only has 1 FA77 left in stock. I haven't heard any word about the
lens going out of production, but I know that Dave Brooks has been
waiting (impatiently?) for his to arrive for months now...

Immediately, i feel reservations about selling my FA77 - but as I've
been watching GDG's musings about equipment, I'm aware that it's only
equipment. I just wonder if it's not wiser to hold onto the lens and
sell it later! :)
