Hehehehehe. You get points for originality. ;-) I think there is too much
contrast, i.e. strong lighting in a lot of them -- takes away from the
subject.
Maybe cropping would be a good idea.

Adam, nice presentation.

Though I never thought of dry flowers as of dead ones... I think I might

You're probably right. I think it's Flash 7
I tried it at home and it works there. Sort of. I'm on dial-up and the
pictures autoscroll before they've finished loading.
I hate dial-up

Sounds like you've got an old/broken version of flash. The gallery puts
up navigation arrows, and also dims the images to each side.

On my machine I got the center image brighter... and arrows on each
edge of the screen for scrolling through the images.

I can't help but think you have an old/weird version of FLASH player

I'm wondering if I'm missing something though. The only way to advance
through the photos is to click on the middle one, but there is no hint

Re: GESO - Dead Heads

2007-01-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Yes, this is true.

Vertical real estate on the display is more valuable than horizontal
real estate, so I design to take advantage of vertical real estate
and down-size the horizontals to make for a more evenly spaced
presentation. An all vertical or all horizontal presentation provide
the most uniform display, however, you can use the orientation and
sizing differences to punctuate and change the expression of your
photos as well.

Note that with a restricted height value, orientation makes a big
difference in size. The landscape images are twice the size of the
portrait orinetation, although image size is pretty similar between the
two differing vertical sizes. My second gallery is mostly portrait
orinetation while the first is mostly landscape.

Difference in startup time for this set is small compared to the
Window People set (www.gdgphoto.com's webserver host is supplied by
godaddy.com). Overall, I prefer the presentation dynamics of the
smaller images even on the 23" screen, although the larger images in

is far nicer to my eye.

I tend to like plenty of empty space around the display of photos to
allow the eye sufficient rest from distraction. The larger size you
presented, on the laptop screen, seems tightly confined there with
little chance for the eye to rest.

Certainly a matter of preference in aesthetics... :-)

Godfrey, I've just posted another gallery (A collection of my shots of

. The images are sized similar to yours as an experiment (535 pixels

I have a fairly large screen at work (crt 21" I think) and I only saw
the large pics one at a time. I didn't see anything either side until
I got to the vertical one.
Starting it was a bit odd too.
I first got a black screen with
SimpleViewer requires Macromedia Flash. Get Macromedia Flash. If you
have Flash installed, click to view gallery
across the top of the page
"Macromedia Flash" and "click to view gallery" were dark blue on black
so I couldn't read the words.
Anyway, I clicked to view gallery (as I have flash installed) and off it went.

I liked the series of photos but didn't like this gallery presentation much

Re: GESO - Dead Heads

2007-01-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
There area a couple of problems with that, Adam.

- Even though the display space is 750 pixels tall, when you account
for menu bars, window structure etc, the image size is too large.
Better to err on the safe side and make the display images a bit
smaller, around 550 to 600 pixels tall at max looks better on a
1280x800 or particularly a 1024x768 display in a typical browser
window IMO. Despite that I like the larger view on the 23" screen,
there are still a lot of people out there with 1024x768 displays.

- It is much more timing consuming to start up with such large image
files to download, even with broadband. Your set of 6 images takes at
least 3x as long to load and start compared to the set of 12 I put up
on the same broadband connection with the same computer and browser.
My image sizing is approximately 534 pixels tall at maximum.

There's also the dynamics of the presentation to consider. One of the
things I like about this presentation is that you can see what's
coming and what's just been on the screen, in part and dimmed, to
give a sense of the sequence. With the larger images, you lose that
effect unless you have a very big display.

The combination has proved to be a real winner.

Well, it's an excellent piece of software and I certainly don't mind the
small amount of manual editing necessary to set it up.

I optimised the image sizes to just fit the common 1280x800 widescreen

resolution of the common displays in use today. Hopefully it will look
equally good on larger displays.

I couldn't resist the title. And I'm glad you liked them.

I generally prefer to present photos with themes, but my shooting is a
little eclectic and that's often difficult. I lucked outwith this series
though.

I gotta say the bokeh of the fist 3 is blah.

WRT the page, I prefer thumbnails to auto viewers.

Cheers,

Is 5/6 a digital capture? I really like the texture of the background.

Credit where it's due: Juan found it first.

It's a darn nice flash viewer utility. Simple to set up, quick to
load. I like how you have set relatively large image sizes and it
auto-scales properly to the size of the browser window too.

Amusing pictures too ... ;-)

I was afraid of opening it.
But it is very cool. I like the ideas of showing photos in theme.

I find the backgrounds of nos. 2 and 3 a bit
distracting. Otherwise, nice!
