Subject: GESO - Tending to the Little Ones

I posted a shot of a local red-necked grebe nest with a couple of eggs
(first time anyone remembers them laying more than one egg). As
mentioned, they've never managed to hatch one in the 7 years that
they've had a nest here so fingers are crossed.

Here are the best four (including last week's, so three new ones) of
 that session:

Was shooting hand-held, so I'm pleased with the sharpness all things
considered. You should have seen the rejects. ;-)

Hope you enjoy. Comments always welcome.

 cheers,
 frank

Interesting. Any explanation why the eggs haven't been able to hatch? Cheers,

Re: GESO - Tending to the Little Ones

2012-07-22 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Yeah, they get eaten.

What I've been told is that if the grebes get frightened off their nest by
barking dogs or loud children at the shore (the nests are about 20 or 30 yards
off shore) then the untended eggs will get eaten by gulls or other predators.

The gulls don't frighten the grebes but they're constantly in the area to swoop
in for opportunities.

Thanks for the comment and thanks to all who looked and commented.

Cheers,
frank
