2009-04-15 Thread Rick Womer

Larry,

I really like these, especially 3455--nice juxtaposition of hard and soft, grey
steel and colorful flowers; and nice use of DOF.

Have I ever mentioned that I hate Flickr? The stupid two-photo-at-a-time
thumbnails, the need to click to see a decently large image (sometimes not
available), the whole space-wasting layout--it makes looking at photos like
walking with a pebble in my shoe.

Nice photos, though!

These pictures were shot on the West side of Hellyer for a
change. There's a little red International tractor
 parked in a field
next to a company parking lot. I stopped by for a quick
 shoot when I
 left work yesterday:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157616541528855/

As usual the DA40 was on my camera, and pretty much all of
 my other
lenses were in my camera bag. There were arguments in favor
 of
grabbing the bag so that I'd have all of my lenses with
 me, but for
some reason, I just wanted to shoot with the DA40. I
 can't explain why
I enjoy shooting with that one lens so much.

The DFA50 macro would have been handy on some of the shots,
 but I
don't like the bokeh quite as much, and maybe the
 18-250 isn't quite
as razor sharp, but that's about all of the bad things
 I have to say
about the lenses I might have used. There's something,
 and I can't
define it, that just makes shooting with that lens fun.

I do think that I'll need to go back soon with the
 macro for some of
 the detail shots.

I also need to get better at winnowing out shots. There are
 things in
Lightroom for help with that, I just need to get off my
 duff and learn
 those features.

CC, especially suggestions for improvement, welcome.

Thanks a bunch.

On my way back from lunch I went back there again, but this time with
the K20 and the FA31 and tripod. Someone had suggested that a couple
of the shots would have worked better with more DOF, and it seemed
like a good opportunity to test the repairs of my camera.

large image (sometimes not available), the whole space-wasting
layout--it makes looking at photos like walking with a pebble in my
 shoe.

When I got my Pentax I had several friends on flickr. For about $25 a
year being able to upload unlimited photos for offsite backup is
rather handy. It's also handy for some of the social networking
features.

Other than that, I agree with you that it sucks. My longer term plan,
was to start off with flicker for my mass uploads. Once I start
getting decent pictures, the plan is to upload the few good ones to a
completely separate site. That way, when I'm showing off my
photographs, rather than my snapshots, people will only see my better
work.

I think that I'm finally starting to get pictures worth showing off,
and need to start looking for a site for the good photos.
Unfortunately, I've not found any photo hosting sites that I actually
like.

I suck at web programming, plus I don't even have time to look for a
site, much less create one, otherwise I'd do my own. I'd love to set
up a site for useful CC of photographs. Something along the lines of
a blogging site (live journal) where people can comment on photos, and
where you can control who on your friendslist gets to see which posts.

I'd also like to be able to have people rate photos, but not just a
scalar, have them rate different aspects of the photo:

technical:
   exposure
   sharpness
   focus

artistic:
   composition
   subject

It would also be nice to be able to rate people both as photographers
and as critics. I've noticed, for example, that photographers will
like different photos than non-photographers because we look for
different things.

But, I'll stop designing a website that I don't have time to build.

 Nice photos, though!

Thanks a bunch.

There's a reason I always post a direct link to a large JPEG when I
post flickr links. I like the site for some aspects (mostly social),

G'day Larry

That's a good collection and the DA40 has done well. The time of day
has helped as well - that afternoon light has a rich, warm glow that's
very appealing for these detail shots.

I really like 3421, 3425, 3426, 3461 (that tuft of grass is a bonus),
3477 (great abstract!). I can't really offer suggestions for
improvement other than to try different DoF for the same composition.
For example, I like 3486 but I might find it more appealing with greater
DoF.
