Back in the early 1980s I had the good fortune to do some (unpaid)
underground
radio. About three times a year I'd put together a show on the theme
"The Children of Miles." Never ran out of material...

Miles was a great nurturer of musicians, as was Duke, John Mayall, and
Zappa. Hey, we've got enough material here to hijack the list for weeks!

Well, we all shoot Pentax, don't we?

Me neither. I oughta buy it, I loved it.

But like the subject line says, let's get back to basics! There are
absolutely no Pentax cameras in Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown, an
oversight that perhaps Mister Allen can correct with digital imaging for
the upcoming Sweet and Lowdown: Special Director's Cut.

What other movies would be better with Pentaxes in them?

Frank,

Yes, that is much as I thought.

I can see why some thought his stuff was "milky" compared to his
contemporaries but I love him.

He has had quite a bit of success. I think to say he had little impact on the
evolution of Jazz would be unfair. At the very least he turned on a lot of
people to a kind of music they may not have been exposed to before.

Re: Jazz (Was Re: Gettiong Back to Basics)

2002-01-10 Thread frank theriault

Hi, Brendan,

Brubeck was criticized for all those things - as you said, unfairly.
One of the criticisms that I read of him is that his "European"
classical influences, including his unusual time signatures moved jazz
away from it's "roots"; that he played a "white" jazz (please excuse
the racial reference - I don't agree with the assessment, I'm passing on
what I've read in more than one place), and catered to white
middle-class college students.

Truth is, I think he was criticized because he was popular. He sold
boatloads of albums, and continues to do so. I could be wrong, but I
would guess that after Davis' "Kind of Blue", "Take Five" is probably
the best selling jazz album of all time, or pretty damn close.

Nothing breeds contempt like success...

frank

Anyone here who loves (or even likes) jazz, or Woody Allen for that matter, should
see "Sweet and Low" (I think that was the title), Woody's faux-documentary of a
30's or 40's jazz guitarist. Sean Penn plays the guitarist. I think it was
released around 2 years ago. Great flick, great soundtrack.

Strange, but as I started reading through this thread, I had Miles Davis'
"Nefertiti" on the CD, blasting nice and loud. Probably his strongest over-all
band, with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter. I know, I know, some of his
'50's bands were pretty amazing, too, especially the musicians on "Kind of Blue"
(hard to beat Coltrane, Evans and Adderly...). I could argue with myself for
hours.

I know it ain't about Pentax, but ya gotta love jazz!

Hi Rob,
You made me wish to hear that piece!

I started last year a collaboration with a group for slide
projections during their concerts (mostly Irish traditional
songs), and the pianist proposed me to accompany him playing
early Brubeck pieces with my photos. We had a great time taking
shots of him playing piano and discussing how could be possible
to represent with photography the sound and the emotions
expressed by the music (good old acoustic photography!).
We have another concert/slideshow dedicated to Brubeck on the
19th. This time the program includes Take Five, too, although I
think I'm not going to accompany it. Too difficult to find
pictures that can match.

Hi ...

I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The album, originally recorded in 1963,
features 'trane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones, with
Hartman doing the vocals. There are but six cuts - They Say It's
Wonderful; Dedicated to You; My One and Only Love; Lush Life; You Are
Too Beautiful; and Autumn Serenade. If you're not familiar with Hartman,
this is a good introduction, and Coltrane plays in a very mellow,
melodic manner.

A few months after recording this album, Hartman got together with Hank
Jones, Illinois Jacquet, Kenny Burrel, Milt Hinton, and Elvin Jones, and
recorded "I Just Dropped By to Say Hello", an album in a similar mood.

His music was also featured in the movie "Bridges of Madison County."
Check out the CD "Remembering Madison County" for a real treat.

Listen, I could go on for hours about this guy ...

As for myself, I like all kinds of music, from classical to hip-hop.

Len! Woody Allen...comedian, writer-director, filmmaker!

You mean you haven't heard his band?

Actually, for folks like me he's a filmmaker but he's also a clarinetist. He's got a
little combo that plays Monday nights in NYC.

There's an interesting film by Barbara Koppel called, "Wild Man Blues," about Woody
and his group touring through Europe a few years back. Neat stuff.

He's not the world's best musician, but then he's nowhere near the worst either.

Not a bad filmmaker, either. He's won at least one Oscar. He wasn't there to accept it
(for Annie Hall) as the story goes, since the Oscars used to be on Monday nights and
he always gigs on Mondays.
