The fact they had one on hand makes you wonder how reliable the part was.

Glad all is finally well Mark

Re: Good night all. Next post will be from North Carolina.

2015-05-29 Thread Mark Roberts
So I arrived at Grandfather Mountain
 yesterday after some drama. I
left Ashe county and drove to Footsloggers, a great hiking store in
Boone, NC. After picking up some supplies there I got on the road again
and then, just a dozen or so miles from GFM, my car died. It just shut
down the engine and displayed some indecipherable symbols on the dash.
Luckily, I was just half a mile from the Toyota dealer in Boone. Even
more happily, an employee of Wendy's in whose parking lot my car came to
rest gave me a lift to the Toyota dealer. I had the car towed there and
the nice folks of Modern Toyota took pity on an out-of-towner and looked
at the car right away. Turns out the mass air sensor in the fuel
injection system had failed. They had me on my way in less than three
hours. OK, it cost four hundred dollars, but they could have charged me
pretty much anything they wanted (and presumably they knew it!)

Met Doug Brewer and several other members of the crew. Went out for
dinner and called it a night early. Thunderstorms precluded my
traditional night out on the mountain so I stayed in the guest cottage.

I spent this morning slowly driving into the town of Blowing Rock,
stopping every quarter of a mile or so to photograph streams and
waterfalls that were flowing nicely from last night's rain.

After a 14-hour drive I'm ensconced at the cabin in North Carolina. Just
50 miles from GFM. Now it's time for a shower and some refreshments!

I'm planning to be on the road early Wednesday morning on my way to
GFM. I don't have to be up early to beat Boston rush hour traffic but
I do have to be up *very* early to beat Hartford, Connecticut rush
hour traffic. It's all smooth sailing after that. Wednesday night I'll
be at my friends' place in Ashe County and Thursday I'll be at
Grandfather Mountain. I'm probably going to camp out in the back
country on Thursday night but I'll be catching up with Doug Brewer and
the rest of the crew of Friday. Photos (I haven't even finished
editing my shots from Devon yet) and embarrassing stories to follow
shortly...
