Thanks. Yes, I noticed when I went to REI that Thermarest also has pads that
aren't inflatable. Previously I thought they were all inflatables. I eyed
them and I am thinking about them.

Re: Ground Cover Question

2007-04-22 Thread Eactivist
Thanks to all who gave me ideas on a ground cover.

I went to REI and found a picnic blanket with straps. Basically, it is
waterproofed on one side, and has sort of blanket on the other. Not a real
blanket, so it is not that thick. Not quite what I want, but it will do. Since
I
have never been a football attendee, nor a picnicker, I hadn't thought of
those.
There does appear to be a wide choice for both out there on the Net, so I can
find something better later. But I needed something right now.

So thanks.

I am taking off on a mini-trip to do some photography. That is what I care
about, photography -- not all this other stuff.

I am going hunting for the elusive California poppy. A dangerous job, but
someone has to do it. ;-)

Back next week sometime.

I have one of the "blankets" that Eastern or Piedmont used to give to
passengers that was given to me by a flight attendant friend many many
years ago. It's a little small, but works in a pinch and doesn't take
up too much room in the trunk of the car.

I have an old blue plaid stadium blanket that someone gave me years
ago. I've carried it in the back of my car for just this purpose.
For those times when the ground is actually sodden, I also have a
cheap plastic tarp that I picked up for a few bucks at Wal-Mart. It
has grommets in the corners and can actually be tied down in windy
weather, although I haven't had to do that.

I used to have a ground cover that was lightweight - blue on one side
and aluminum foil look on the other...
it was about 6 x 8 feet - meant to go under a tent or to use as a shield
from rain over the tent...
since it isn't fabric, it is easier to get rid of stuff that might be
under it.. just hose it down --
Kinda along the idea of what Markus suggested

I've got a woolen car blanket (picnic blanket) that folds up into a block about
10"x6"x6" with velcro to hold it together and a handle. Opens up to about 5ft
square. Even better, one side is waterproofed with a heavy vinyl type layer.
Costs about the equivalent of $15 in the UK, available from many motoring
shops. Ask Cotty to bring one over to GFM for you. 8-)

If you ask your local Brownie troop, I'm sure you will find somebody
who will show you how to weave strips of newspaper into a "sit-upon".
They are usually made such that a tall kitchen garbage bas is used
for the waterproof covering over the newspaper padding, but I'm sure
you could work out how to make one a little larger. The weaving is
important; the final product offers more padding than just covering
newspapers with waterproof plastic.

I would suggest a "Space Blanket" not the silver mylar film kind which
is almost impossible to refold, but the heavier type with one side
colored. It weighs only ounces and is rather tough, you could probably
fit it in your camera bag. It will also keep you dry when the ground is
wet. Google "MPI Space Blanket" to see what I am talking about.

However, what you asked about is called a "picnic blanket", I think. I
see them at Wal-Mart every now and again. Looks like a small nylon

Sounds like a good idea. I wonder if something with a bit of padding
(very light weight sleeping bag) might not be available with a carry
rigging of some sort. While lying down would give you a fairly stable
camera holding position, I'd probably, also, try including my "bean

very light and can be folded into a very small package, They're waterproof
too. Plus, they have a reflective side or coating which can be used to
fill shadows in some photographic situations.

I'm not sure it would suit your purposes, Marnie, but it might fit
someone else's around here. There's a ... hmmm ... "device" that long
distance shooters use that opens into a "ground cloth" you can lie on,
and closes to protect a rifle and some gear and ride around on your back
via some shoulder straps. I'm not sure what it's called, but if anyone
is interested I can dig around and see if I can find an ad for them.

First thing I thought of was a stadium blanket. That's just the first link
I found.

RE: Ground Cover Question

2007-04-20 Thread Markus Maurer
Hi Marnie
I always carry a large white plastic sack folded in my photo bag outside
pocket. I use it for wet ground and could probably use it to add a little
light reflection for macr shots as well. I have it also as a backup if the
photo bag breaks or as a rain protection for the K10D.
Light and very useful IMHO

Greetings
Markus

I have some pics in mind that I'd like to take close to the ground. Like
with me laying flat. I am an old lady with sort of bad knees, so crouching
is
out. Laying down isn't.

So I've been thinking of putting a blanket in the car. Well, yes, its
partly
a clothing issue -- not get them all messed up. But is also partly a
comfort
issue -- some places very soon here in California will have dry grass,
prickly grass. I want some padding.

Has anyone ever made a sort of blanket that can fold up small into a small
duffle with a shoulder strap? There must be something like that somewhere,
I
would think.

Input welcome.

Sounds like a situation where a smallish size lined picnic blanket might
come in handy:

Ground Cover Question

2007-04-19 Thread Eactivist
I have some pics in mind that I'd like to take close to the ground. Like
