So do I,
but still, the apparent demise of demime is a concern. I hope our
good listguy will work out another solution, perhaps demime on
smartlist. I wonder if attachments work? A short test of null
file... Anyway, html and & or attachments are and always were
considered very bad manners... But demime was a good soft to
automatically take care of it, even though it strippled Pal
Jensen's name of the Northern A with a dash :)

Good light,

this isn't null I know... sorry :)

RE: HTML Test

2002-08-28 Thread David Chang-Sang

I'm not sure what the list rules are but a number of other lists I know of
online usually do not allow HTML email (although it is possible to send it).
The reasons for this, I'm sure people are aware of, are the following:

1) HTML while not being "huge" in terms of kilobytes does take up more room
than standard text and therefore on a busy list could in fact tax the
server. From another list I belong to: "When you send HTML to the list
server, it sends both the HTML and plain text versions of your email to each
and every subscriber, as well as archiving both versions into the digest
forms of the list. That's at least double the work on the part of the
server. You might not realize that, but if you have a list server with a lot
of lists and a lot of subscribers on each list, doubling the workload can
cause slow downs and untimely postings. Having the HTML in the digest
generally makes the digest unusable, or at least a major pain to scan
through."

2) The potential for abuse or viruses is obviously higher with HTML emails
vs plain text - I'm not saying someone on the list would maliciously send a
virus to the list but the potential is a lot higher with HTML (and embedded
Javascript) vs plain text.

I'm sure there may be more reasons but these were the two major ones that I
can think of.

I'm not against HTML but I do get concerned when it arrives via email from a
list

Cheers,
Dave

William,
I agree it's bad manners, it's just that some member may not know they're
sending HTML.
I presume the previous system stripped it to plain text, which was a nice
catch-all for those less email literate.
Yours politely in text,
Simon
