Re: How unpleasant.........

2002-04-08 Thread Kenneth Waller

In the last several years I've purchased new the FA 300 f4.5, 17-28mm F and
a 600mm FA, all have come with the "bayonet" type rear cap. My read on the
push on cap is that somewhere, from Pentax to customer, somebody is removing
the bayonet cap and replacing it with the push on.

I think it's more like Pentax was trying to save a few bucks and forced
their customers to purchase the original rear cap as accessories at some
point in mid-90's. Somehow they realized that didn't work and then included
the good old cap again.

The 50mm F1.2A lenses in question came direct from Pentax Japan to the wholesaler,
(who did not have any in stock). It's worth mentioning that the internal packing is a
bizarre assembly of perforated polystyrene, almost impossible to reassemble once it is
opened. I have seen this type of packing before from Pentax, in the 40mm pancake
boxes. These lenses came from the factory thus.

The only lenses that I have purchased that did not have a rear cap were
those included with the camera. If the lens was pulled out of a camera kit,
it is unlikely that it would have a rear cap. Since the original caps cost
money, a cheaper subsitute would make more sense for the dealer.
Right? Peter.

I bought a month ago from Adorama a new FA 50 f1.4 lens, and I got
surprised to get it with the plastic cheapo push on back cap. I promply
replaced it with one of my ( backup) real FA back caps. hmmm, strange
is that I bought an FA 135mm f2.8 almost 2 years ago and had the real FA
rear cap. Who knows!

2002-04-06 Thread Len Paris

I've bought nine AF lenses in the past 5 years and they all came
with the good rear lens cap. The one that bayonets on and has
the "lip" type edge that protects the electrical contacts.
Perhaps the good folks Alan has been buying from have been
replacing the rear caps that come from Pentax with cheap ones
for reasons of their own.
