Bigger than sparrows - about the size of Bluejays and Robins - tiny bit 
larger than doves I think, but not as large as pigeons.

Thanks, Dan.  I could have made a better effort, but I was in an unshoveled 
park, and found it difficult to move quickly.  Lots of snow out there today. 
I wanted to get closer, but by the time I began tramping towards the bird,

The brownish colored ones are females.  The males are the brilliant red color.  
As for size, they are typically smaler than American Robins but larger than 
your basic house sparrow.

The brownish colored ones are females.  The males are the brilliant red color.  
As for size, they are typically smaler than American Robins but larger than 
your basic house sparrow.
