Re: I am an idiot: Broke off the battery door on my K-3 II

2016-04-19 Thread John

That happened to my *ist-D. While I was walking through the woods.

The camera wouldn't power up without the card door in place.

Fortunately, I found the door when it popped off & duct tape held it in
position until my local repair guy could get a replacement from Pentax.

worked. Maybe Pentax reads the list and cut back on the over

Re: I am an idiot: Broke off the battery door on my K-3 II

2016-04-17 Thread John

Had one (Super Program) packed inside my rucksack when the rucksack fell
off the back of a deuce-and-a-half and get run over by the next
deuce-and-a-half in the convoy.

I had the rucksack safely stowed in the back, but someone moved it while
digging around in there to get to their gear & didn't put it back where
I had stowed it; they left it where it could bounce out.

Also if it makes you feel any better I was stupid enough to push the
quick release button on a tripod which caused my K-5 and 12-24 to both
crash into the asphalt 5 feet below. Neither fared very well. I also
was stupid enough to leave that same camera somewhere I thought was
secure with my belongings only to return to find that it disappeared.
Luckily only a $50 50-200 was attached. It magically returned to me 2
months later in even worse shape. That camera was pretty cursed I tell
you. Thankfully I replaced it with a K-5 IIs which focuses 100x better
and just never looked back.

I hope you get it sorted. :(

it would probably be a really easy thing to repair. You would have to
make sure the weather sealing gasket for the bottom plate was clean
and correctly placed is all. parts are hard to come by. the first
option would be to find a completely broken camera with a good bottom
plate. that would be cheaper than precision or any service center. If
the door is the same as my old broken K-5 I would gladly cannibalize
if for you. My K-3 is back at precision for the THIRD time so I cannot
compare. :/

Did the camera see a fall or anything. If it hit hard you might want
to have someone check it out anyways or at least test it thoroughly.
It will operate without a battery door and the battery does lock
inside the camera. Not ideal, but at least you can test it out.

Eric can get pentax parts thought he does not service digital cameras.
You could ask him if he could get a bottom plate for your from Pentax.
Just an idea.

No idea how it happened, but I know I was stupid enough to leave the
camera with the battery door open. I'm assuming that I will need the
entire bottom plate replaced. Is there anywhere I can purchase the
part and replace it myself?

This is a BAD time of year for this to happen. I'm guessing I can
still use it, a spring-loaded clip holds the battery in, even with the
door open - and I think I can put the grip on it to make sure it
doesn't drop out.
