I managed to find a place to work in Virginia where a good portion of my
co-workers are into F1 at least as much as I am. They've gone to Indy to see
the USGP both in 2000 and 2001 and are going again this year (budget and
timing have prevented me from joining them).

I just hope Speedvision doesn't turn into The NASCAR Channel as has been
threatened by FOX

Hey! I resemble that remark! :-)

Unfortunately, you're right, but a few of us are trying desperately to
be good enough fans to even out the sods. :-) My brother is trying to
get me to go to Le Mans with him this year ... I'm trying to talk him
into going next year so we can send mom on a trip this year. But I'll
get to Le Mans sometime. If I have to, I'll put it in my will to be
cremated and my ashes dumped over the Mulsanne Straight. Or maybe the
stadium section at Hockenheim. Or the harbor at Monaco (about the only
way I'm going to get to Monaco).

Paul, I agree that American car companies are interested but it's the
American public (and more to the point, the American TV broadcasters) that
show little interest. Thank god for Speedvision. If it wasn't for that
channel I would not be able to watch any motor racing except NASCAR.

Yes the Vipers and Cadillacs do well but we don't get to watch them do well
unless we go to the races (or maybe see them tape-delayed on ESPN a week or
month late).

I don't think that's necessarily true. The Formula One race at Indy has
attracted a tremendous amount of support in its two year run, and earlier
ventures at Detroit, Watkins Glen and elsewhere were well supported by
fans. Some were abandoned because of unreasonable demands from Ecclestone
and his motorsports mafia, but the support and interest have always been
there. In recent sports car racing venues, Dodge Vipers have won their
class at Le Mans, and the new Cadillacs have performed quite well. We are
interested in International Motorsports and American automakers are
supportive of the various series, but we have other motorsport interests
 as well.

While it is true that mainstream TV (in the US, at least) does not cover

is because the only thing more boring than watching car races on TV is

What about the self-destructing 1.5 liter Turbo V10's of the early 80's?
Man, those things screamed! I can't imagine the stress on those tiny
little pistons. BTW, that sound was not Rueben's V10, it was a
recording of Coulthard explaining to the Mercedes engineers what it
sounds like each time that Schumacher passes him. :)
