K20D Review in "Amateur Photographer"

2008-04-09 Thread Colin J
I was considering buying a K20D because the low noise 14.6 MP sensor is
particularly attractive. However, the review in this week's "Amateur
Photographer" was a little disappointing, particularly when referring to purple
fringing.

The review pointed out that a recent optical test of the 16-50mm f/2.8 DA lens
showed no problem of chromatic aberration, so the reviewer concluded that the
colour fringing must have come from the sensor.

Any comments? Why should I buy a DSLR with a colour fringing problem?

I have yet to see any purple fringing after 2500 K20D shots. But I
don't shoot black branches against glowing white skies either. In
fact, I've experienced more fringing with all of my other DSLRs. The
*istD was the worst of them.

They are having QC problems with the lens you mentioned. It's pretty widely
reported, I don't
expect we'll be seeing any QC problems with it in a few months as new stock
ships. Try to find a
DSLR anwhere that doesn't dislpay some PF under certain conditions. They all do
it, and it's
easy to produce. Just take a picture of a subject so heavily backlit as to be
unphotographable.

Since that's the opposite results others have reported I begin to doubt
the veracity of any review.

Look this is a situation , high contrast, that I would have expected to
cause sensor bloom, and lots of it.

Made with the *ist-Ds and F 70-210mm. I examined it closely and found
almost none. I think that reviewers are shooting images intended to
produce it intentionally and don't stop until it appears. They can then
say "Ah-ha there it is."

There's your problem. The K20D is targeted at enthusiasts and budding
professionals. Not amateur photographers. Gees.
