umlaut on windows machines: while depressing the ALT key, type in on the numerical key pad, on the right hand side of your key board, 0252, then let the ALT key go. My wife and I spent a couple of very pleasant days in the Schwartzwald a few years ago, staying in an inn at Stube (this keyboard doesn't have an omlaut).
