It might have been. The way movies are made the scene could have been shot
at different times then stitched together. There are lots of times that
the continuity is a film is screwed up this way, (in fact it's fun to look
for them).

look at Help! tonight (I have it on LaserDisc but not A Hard Day's
Night) out of optimism that I might have been wrong about what cameras
they have in the Bahamas sequence.

I checked but it's hard to tell what brand of camera it might have been.
Funny thing though is at a certain angle, when he was actually taking some
snapshots with it, it kinda even looked liked a rangefinder.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a Pentax. My local Pentax service
shop has a poster on the wall, featuring the Beatles with Spotmatics.

More Pentax spotting

2001-05-14 Thread Aaron Reynolds

So, Vanessa gave me the Beatles Anthology eight laserdisc set for my
birthday (those of you with laserdisc players and Beatlemania should be
advised that the set, previously priced in the neighborhood of $250, is
now $29.99 plus shipping brand new from several online laserdisc
retailers and is entirely worth the money). So, of course, I have about
fourteen hours of Beatle-watching to do. And what do I find by the
fourth hour? So far TWO references to the mighty Pentax!

The first, in discussing their first tour of the USA, Paul speaks of
wandering tourist-like around Miami, and taking lots of pictures with
our Pentax cameras. The accompanying footage, however, doesn't give us
a close look at what they're shooting with, except that the bodies are
black and they appear to have 50mm lenses on 'em. This would be in
1964. I seem to recall having a close look at the SLRs in their movie
Help! (from 65 or 66 IIRC) and finally deciding that they were Nikons,
but I don't remember what finally made my mind up about that...I know
that a reporter brandishes a Pentax of some kind in the earlier A Hard
Day's Night, and I'm pretty sure that when Ringo is wandering around
sadly by himself he has a Pentax, but again, I forget what I used to
make up my mind.

Anyhow, later in Anthology, they show some footage from a Beatles
appearance on a British TV show, and Ringo's drum riser has been made up
too look like an SLR, complete with lens, and across the prism is the
inscription Beatax.

Okay, I reread this message, and I've decided that I'm either obsessed
or just really a geek.

On the wall in the offices of the Norwegian Pentax distributor, there is a
picture of all the Beatle members with a Pentax each. The shot is obviously
arranged as a commercial shot. But I have never thought of noting which
model(s), I'm sorry...

Beatles Pentaxes are probably S3, S2, S1, or S1a.
