Some tricks are: go where the birds are close, and accustomed to human
contact, or use a blind, or stay in the car (which is a good blind),
or set up a feeding station, or know enough about bird habits to be in
the right place at the right time, or set up a trap focus situation,
or a remote shutter release, or something like a Woods Shutter Beam
setup, or shoot larger birds - or just get lucky.

I've learned to know the distance beyond which I can't get the shot,
so I carry along my great Pentax binoculars, and just enjoy the view,
and save my film for closer shots.

Re: More teleconverter questions

2001-04-24 Thread Kenneth Waller

Bob, I have a 600mm FA that I regularly use with a 1.4X-L converter. I can't
tell from the image whether it was taken with or without the converter. My
personal belief is to use the Pentax converters with Pentax lenses. I
believe (unsubstantiated) these combos produce the best results.

Bob,

Just to confirm, I use the 1.4XL on my A 400 f:5.6 all the time. I don't
know if the 2XL will work or not.

More teleconverter questions

2001-04-23 Thread Bob Keefer

Thanks for the responses so far. Since there is apparently no way to use a
2X converter on my FA*300/4.5 and get decent results, I'm wondering about
better options for photographing birds.

1. The FA*400/5.6 and 1.4X converter. Anyone do this? Is the S or L
converter better for this lens?

2. An old SMC 500/4.5. Anyone use this lens? Does it work well with
converters?

3. Suck up and buy an A* 600/5.6. Meanwhile, anyone actually used this thing
with TCs?

4. Sell off enough equipment to buy myself a Canon 100-400/5.6 with IS and a
body to slap on the back. I can borrow my son's converters. This begins to
look more and more like the future, if I stay interested in birds.

Some time I should pencil out the cost of all these ideas. Thoughts?

Bob
