OT: FTP program

2006-04-24 Thread Butch Black

Hi Guys;

Any recommendations on an FTP program, preferably shareware or freeware. I
could have used one a few weeks ago. I doubt that I would use it often so I
don't want to spend much money on it.

Butch

note to self. Never assume that because is educated that they will have a
lick of common sense.

Assuming you are talking about PC, I would recommend
Ws-ftp LE.
The older versions (I have 5.08) used to be free for non-business use,
and they are running just fine.
If you cannot find one, let me know off the list, I might be able to help you.

If you need sftp capability (if you don't know what this is - just skip
this paragraph), - WinSCP is a good and easy program.

Hi,

I've been using that program for years. It's small, easy to set up, and
works great. It's never missed a beat for me in four or five years.

It can be downloaded from:

http://tinyurl.com/ytzev or
http://saddleback.edu/faculty/dbusche/HTML/WS_FTPTutorial/WSDownload.html

The page includes a tutorial and setup information.

I've already offered to send Butch a copy (it's less than 500K zipped!)

Shel

For Windows I use SmartFTP. http://www.smartftp.com/ It has an
intuitive drag-and-drop interface, and it's free.

For *nix I tend to stick with gFTP for the GUI or yafc if I'm stuck
with a command line. Both are Free. http://yafc.sourceforge.net/

If you're using any version of Windows after ME it's built in. Just go
to My Network places and add a location, follow the directions it's
pretty straight forward. If you have an earlier version you can use the
dos based FTP client. The good part is they are both free and the dos
based client is fairly flexible once you get used to it.

W2K and XP too, the remote drive mounts in Windows Explorer and you can drag
and drop or delete and rename like you can with any other drive local resource.

I have WS-FTP but I haven't had the need to open it for a few years now.

If you're talking Mac OS X, the one I like a lot is Yummy
FTP (yeah, dumb name). Despite the silly name and even sillier
marketing-jingo-ese in the website, it works very very well and costs
$25 per single user license.

I have been using WS_FTP LE by Ipswitch for about a decade now. Was
freeware, I do not know if it still is.
