OT: Advice on used Leica M2?

2002-07-29 Thread Kristian Walsh

Hi,

I know this is almost completely non-Pentax(*), but I know there are a
few Leica M users lurking here, so here's the question:

Is €250 (~$250) a good price for a working M2, or is it too good to be
true? Cosmetically, the body is quite battered: the leather cover is a
bit torn, the top plate is quite brassy, and there are several dents.
The body comes with a 35/f2.5 Summaron lens, and the body serial number
is around 106,900.

I've popped the shutter and 1/4 and 1/1000, and seems to work. Anything
else to look for?

I don't want this to collect - I just like the idea of a compact, quiet,
35mm camera that I could bring around with me.

Website addresses also gratefully received.

RE: OT: Advice on used Leica M2?

2002-07-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

$250 US with lens is a VERY good price for a used M2 - Even if it is a
user system.

Check the Lens (of course) and ensure that there isn't any haze or fungus
on any of the elements. Hold it up in the light and take a look at it
closely to see if you can see any spots.

You probably should get a CLA done (just because it's already SO
inexpensive for the whole camera) - that should run you about $250 US (or
less) - last time I checked, an M6 CLA up here in Canada was $400 CDN.

Remember, no meter so have your hand meter handy...

Now.. if this was the LUG... and you asked a question about a Pentax item..
you do realise what would happen don't you ? :-)
But here we're far more tolerant (specially if the equipment is as well
built as the M series are) :-)

Cheers,
Dave

Re: OT: Advice on used Leica M2?

2002-07-29 Thread Paul Jones

Hi,

Make sure the framing lines are bright and that the rangefinder patchs are
both bright, if they arnt then it can be quite expensive to fix and would
probaly only be worth doing on one in good cosmetic condition. I wouldnt
worry abou the vulcanite pealing up.

Also trying shining a torch through the lense from back to front and check
if there is any hazy inside, also shine the torch on an angle on the front
and rear element, older leica lenses have quite soft coatings and get
cleaning marks very very easily.

Sounds like a good buy and have fun.

Paul

I have a couple of M2's. I'd make sure the shutter speeds are fairly
accurate and that rangefinder is correct. I have a 35mm f2 Summicron lens
and a 50 Summicron. I have heard that Summaron lenses are a step below.
$250 is a darn good price that I would go for.

 Hi,

that's a very good price - other people have said it sounds too good
to be true, so you should really take a hard look at the camera and
 the lens.

Stephen Gandy has a useful M site:
 http://www.cameraquest.com/mguide.htm which includes a buyers'
checklist - towards the bottom of the page. I found it useful when I was
buying my first M (an M3). The Leica list (LUG) has some preferred people
with good reputations for repairing and CLAing M. The person whose name
comes up most is Sherry Krauter iirc. You can get her details from the
LUG,
unless another PDMLer who has used her services chips in.

Somebody else pointed out that you really need a meter when you go out
and about with these things, and I second that. This can add to the
clutter that you're carrying around - I always take an incident meter.
But you could take a small shoe-mounted incident meter such as one of
the Leica originals, or the Voigtlander meter which has a v.g.
 reputation.

btw, s/n 106,900 makes it a 1933 Leica II! (And still a good deal).
Assuming
it really is an M2 the s/n started at 949,101. If your # is 1,006,900
 then it's a 1960 model. I expect it's a typo, but I don't think there
 were any 2.5 Summarons - it's more likely to be a f/3.5.

 I have 2 Ms - an M3 and an M4-2 - with 3 lenses. They're a real
pleasure to use and well worth having, in my opinion, so I hope yours
checks out ok. It sounds like a great deal.

This is what a *really* brassy M2 looks like - I saved the page off
 eBay: http://www.web-options.com/m2.htm. Enjoy!

Hi Kristian,

I'd like to second what everyone else has said so far, great information. The
the best of the Leica meters that fits in the flash shoe and couples with the
shutter speed dial is the MR-4 however beware that they all require mercury
batteries. They are better to use than any other shoe mount light meter,
otherwise I'd just use a good hand held meter.

For a picture of the MR-4 see:

You might want to check Andrew Nemeths excellent Leica FAQ also at:
