i probably read _The Story About Ping_ 50 times as a young child; it
features "strange dark fishing birds" which are slightly different in
appearance from the cormorants i grew up seeing in Maine

Re: OT: Nat Geo paying homage to the PDML

2019-01-10 Thread John
When I got to go on that trip to China one of the things we did was a cruise
down the Li River. At the end of the trip there was a cormorant fisherman
standing on the steps where the river boat tied up.

He was pretty obviously there to have his photo taken (I'm guessing for tips or
such), but I wasn't able to get the shot because we were being hustled along so
fast by our guide.

If I ever get to go back again, I'm going to assert myself and the group can
wait for me while I get the shot ... or go on without me.

The Li River is just gorgeous scenery.

It's mostly tourist bait though. I think that's ok. :-)

Now I can see the image, and it is stunning.

Back in 1966, I watched Japanese fishermen using cormorants to catch fish
in the Inland Sea.
