OT: New (well, to me) dual scanner

2001-03-29 Thread Alin Flaider

  Hi everybody,

It's about ScanJet 7400c; it just arrived in the office and it'll be
available to me for a while so I prepare a test run.
What's so special about it? Well, the 2400 *optical* resolution for
transparencies, the ability to scan films up to 5x5 inches and finally
the 16 bits per channel.
Looking through the reviewer's guide I can see that the 2400 dpi
are achieved by a two row set of 1200 dpi CCDs of the same colour
sensitivity, slightly overlapped - that HP calls staggered pixel
sensor. According to them, this works better than a 2400 dpi single
row that would give noisier images. Also, fast 600 dpi scans are
achieved via a dedicated, low-noise sensor row. Not a word about the
dynamic range, though.
And now the best part: list price is $500, unbelievably low for this
pro specification. Well, we'll se how "pro" it is. I'll be back with
some conclusions by the end of the week.

  Servus, Alin

  Hi everybody,

[About the HP ScanJet 7400C]

I looked up the specs and it looks really good. W.r.t. transparencies
it seems almost up to par with some film scanners.

More scanning experiences: I lent a 5300C from a friend and spent two
weekends to get it to work with Linux and to scan some pictures and
building a simple website to show them.

The bad news: Neither the 5300 nor the 7400 are listed as `supported' on
http://www.mostang.com/sane/ . There is a trick to get the 5300 working;
it *may* work with the 7400 as well.

See below for the URL.
