Ralf, good to see you.

My problem is rather width due to sharing a covered parking space with a
neighbor. So moving from Hyundai I30 to Ford Focus Active X, I gained few
centimeters in width. It makes my parking ever so more difficult in terms
of precision. I wouldn't want my neighbor to have trouble getting in or out
of his car.

My rented space in an underground car park is a sort of alcove with
limited length. My good old Opel/Vauxhall Vectra B estate fit nicely.
Would have loved to get the Vectra C afterwards but that was too long,
so I had to "scale down" to an Astra which was again a few centimeters
longer but still fit.

So, I'll have to keep buying the next smaller model (which is still
bigger than the old bigger model) if I want to keep my place in the car
park (these are rare and not exactly cheap here).

Sometimes I wonder how we ever got around the next corner with a Volvo
121 that had 68 HP and size 175 tyres.

Quite. I gave up watching almost immediately.

One reason cars keep getting bigger is because the person most likely to
buy a 2021 Wombat is the owner of an earlier-model-year Wombat.

But people and families keep getting bigger, so they're looking for more
space in the car. And they've probably got more household income, too,
so there are lots of opportunites to sell high-profit-margin 'features;
a lot of buyers aren't looking for a feature-for-feature replacement.

I've actually remarked on the Ranger when I pulled up behind one (around
here it's common to see old cars & trucks still in everyday use; we don't
have a lot of salt on the roads during winter to eat away the bodywork).
I've also made similar comments about the Honda Civic; what started off
as a pretty basic (and cheap) entry-level model has changed considerably
over the years, and now looks enormous compared to that original model.
(It's also a whole lot more comfortable to drive, and somewhat faster).

As an individual model line grows that opens up space for a smaller and
cheaper model to be added to the lineup. So while a current-year Wombat
may have grown a few inches compared to last year's model, anyone looking
for a smaller vehicle might prefer to test drive the Woodchuck ...

Back in the early 1960s while a SF region SCCA volunteer I repeatedly heard Bob
(or Al) Holbert use the term "Preposterous ponderous plastic pachyderm" for
GM's two-seater muscle car. Bob (or Al) drove a pretty hot AC Ace and later a

Suburbans are probably about the same size, somewhat heavier but much more fuel
efficient. But they’re outside the norm. Chevy Equinox, a compact vehicle with
quite a bit of interior space, is far and away GM’s best selling SUV.
