Ok, so I lost a whole Sh*tload of mail due to some rather forced Netscape
update... but forget that.
I figured out a way to get into the mail I want to see by copying the
files to an external drive, putting the files

on my old computer that has windoze 98 and real DOS with Kedit on it...

I'm able to open the files with Kedit at the dos prompt -within-windows...
what I've forgotten how to do is
toggle out of windows entirely to fill screen dos... which I need to do.
and then get back to windows.

back in the old days computers used to boot into DOS and a batch file which
started Windows. If your old machine still works that way you could amend
the batch file to skip Windows. Without a suitable old machine to hand I'm
just going from memory, but you could also amend something like config.sys
or startup.sys or .bat, I think, but unless you're absolutely sure of what
you're doing it's best left alone.

Thats the first question...

The second problem is my 'SENT' file is merely too big to use Kedit ... it
is about 79 mgscan't open it
on my new computer either I'd kinda like to split it in pieces but don't
know how or if.

Splitting files cleanly isn't an easy thing to do.

Instead of using an editor that's limited why not try a different editor?
Textpad is a very good one . You can
download it free on a tryout basis, and pay for it only if you decide to
keep it. I liked it so much, I paid for it!

Bob

I don't know why Netscape Communicator when I updated didn't keep that old
sent file... though I'm guessing it had

something to do with it being too large, too...

anyone?

Of course, write me off list and many thanks

I believe she said she has a Windows 98 machine. To open a DOS window
you select - Start|Run and type "command" in the dialog box. Click OK or
hit ENTER. The DOS window can be resized by dragging a corner or by
clicking on the little DOS icon in the upper left of the toolbar and
setting the properties.

Also, with Windows 98 there's a shutdown mode that allows you to
shut-down & restart in MS-DOS Compatibility Mode.

Holding down F8 during startup brings up a Windows 98 menu and one of
the options is to boot to a command prompt.

Or you might be able to open the files in Notepad or Wordpad.

I used to use Textpad at work but I switched to Notepad++
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

It has a couple of simple little features that I just can't go without anymore.

And it's neither vi nor Emacs ;)

Cheers,
Dave

I've recently switched to Notepad++ too, my fave used to be Editeur
(last update 2005) which has a fatal problem with mouse scroll wheels.
