Vs: OT - Voigtlander Bessa R

2001-12-23 Thread Raimo Korhonen

I have only used 2 Voigtländer lenses - 4.5/15 mm and 1.7/35 mm - and they are good.
The R body seems to be priced at about 900 USD - cheap only when compared with Leica.
The camera and lenses are indeed made by Cosina in Japan.
All the best!

A month or two ago, I recall some discussion here about whether Pentax
should consider marketing an upgraded Spotmatic - a sort of limited
edition high-quality metal-bodied all-mechanical. Love my Spotmatics
though I do, I think I poo-pooed the idea as something that Pentax would
never do, thinking that there would be no market for it, and it would be
too expensive to be worth doing.

I just noticed the Voigtlander Bessa R. A rangefinder with a metal
body, all mechanical with led ttl metering, takes Leica (L mount)
screwmount lenses (for goodness sake!). I think they're made in Japan
by Cosina. I'm very interested!

Anyone out there have any experience with them? Anyone know how much
they cost?

Thanks and regards,
frank

Mine reminds me of a P30, minus the plastic film advance leaver. The most of
the MZ series would have less metal, but in my opinion they still feel
better built.

The body is not plastic - chassis is aluminium alloy, only outer panels
are plastic. More metal that current Pentaxes have, except MZ-S I suppose.
The noise is not bad IMHO.

 Hi, tom, Bob and Paul,

 snip
Turns out the body's plastic (a camera shop selling them steered me
wrong).
They also seem to have variable quality from sample to sample, as some
have
found them quite noisy for a rangefinder, while others haven't.

I'm borrowing a friend's at the moment.

- They're pretty cheap, check B+H.
- They've released *really* inexpensive 15mm and 12mm lenses.
- It may be all metal, but it doesn't feel all that solid. The lenses,
otoh, do feel nice.
- I find the shutter speed dial to be clumsy, but maybe I haven't found
the trick to it.
- I can't say I'm a big fan of the led metering.

Hi, tom, Bob and Paul,

Thanks for your responses. I surfed around the web a bit last night, and
much of what you three said was confirmed in various reviews.

Turns out the body's plastic (a camera shop selling them steered me wrong).
They also seem to have variable quality from sample to sample, as some have
found them quite noisy for a rangefinder, while others haven't.

And the lenses have been almost universally praised (plus, I guess, you can
stick old Leica screwmounts on them if you want/can afford to).

I've seen them for not too much on eBay, but from the sounds of it, I'll
want to hold one in my hands before I buy, or at least get a money back
warranty if I buy on on-line - on second thought, that might be a PIA...

Anyway, it seems like an interesting camera. Thanks again to all who
responded.

regards,
frank

Re: OT - Voigtlander Bessa R

2001-12-19 Thread Paul Jones

Hi,

I've had one for a few weeks now. I quite like it, although its taking some
getting used to. I didnt have the money to spring for an M6, nor was i
really prepared to, until i had used an RF for a while.

The metering display is quite different and also took some getting used too,
i would have actualy preferred a match needle system like the Spotmatic, but
illuminated.

Its built on a Metal Chassi, but the external paneling is plastic.

The viewfinder is as bright as the M6, plus it doesn't suffer from as much
flair as the M6.

Meter is very accurate and is a centre weighted and very concentrated, it
has a 17% coverage. The viewfinder is significantly better than squinty one
on the Hexar.

Yep made by cosina.

The shutter is not and quiet as an M6, but significantly quiter than my
Pentax SLR's

I use mine with a Leitz 50/1.5 Summarit lense.

Any more questions then feel free to ask.

Paul
