Apple's latest Java update removes this virus/trojan:

APPLE-SA-2012-04-12-1 Java for OS X 2012-003 and Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8

Run Software Update if it hasn't appeared yet.

fwiw this is not a virus, it is a Trojan horse; users have to be fooled into
thinking they are installing a Flash update, and then give it permission by
entering their login password; not that a real virus is impossible

Kinda scary, if anyone is jumping on any AV software bandwagons, let me know.

big Apple mistake not to patch its Java sooner, but there are so many people
who never update their computers, it might not matter; i would recommend having
Java in the browser off anyway, and take a breath and think whenever you
install something

i also recommend Little Snitch, which incidentally causes this particular
Trojan attack to delete itself

if you want anti-virus for Mac, the one i've heard the best things about is
ClamXAV

Not meaning to squelch groundless speculation or toss water on any
potential flamefests, but here's some actually useful info.

The virus arrives courtesy of Java, a 3rd-party product, and infected
websites. It relies completely on social engineering to infect your
Mac -- you have to be fooled into installing a fake Adobe Flash Player
update.

http://allthingsd.com/20120406/whats-this-a-mac-virus-no-actually-its-a-weakness-in-java/

https://www.securelist.com/en/blog/208193441/Flashfake_Mac_OS_X_botnet_confirmed

You should run Software Updater to get a new version of Java that
avoids this thing. Apple released that update a couple of days ago.

If you managed to become infected in the meanwhile, read this ...

http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/trojan-downloader_osx_flashback_i.shtml

... or wait for Apple's promised Flashback remover that is reported to
be in the works.

That's because Apple was never a big enough market to warrant writing
viruses for them. It had nothing to do with the specific hardware
that Apple decided to use.

Nothing about Intel hardware makes the OS less secure. There are plenty
of holes in POSIX compliant operating systems, I'll bet that the new
Mac Virus takes advantage of one of them. The security holes in Windows
were usually available everywhere, and POSIX is an optional subsystem
AFICR on NT systems so it's not a sure method of entry. Hardware is as
secure or insecure as the OS that runs on it.

Actually they're not quite sure that it replaces phosphorus at this
point, the analogy I read was that unless there was some other mechinism
holding the DNA togeher it would be like building a skyscraper out of
sand instead of concrete and steal. Arsenic just wouldn't provide the
structural integrity and the DNA strands would just fall apart.

On 12/2/2010 4:59 PM, Jeffery Smith wrote:

Strange finding. They discovered a bacterium that uses arsenic in place of
phosphorus in its DNA. That is somewhat earth-shaking in the biology field, as
no other organism on earth has been able to substitute other elements in DNA.

I don't think anybody is really surprised about the finding. I have no
scientific education to speak of, but I remember when I first read The Blind
Watchmaker by Dawkins how simple it all seemed, according to his wonderful
explanation, and how unsurprising it is that some sort of replicators got
started in the primordial soup. I'd be surprised if the whole universe isn't
teeming with life, and almost as surprised if I die before it's been
confirmed on Europa or some other such body.

Re: OT - We are not alone?

I'm curious about the particulars, e.g., if their DNA uses As in place of P,
does their RNA do so as well? Is their habitat devoid of P?

I'm never surprised when a living thing takes advantage of an unfilled niche,
but this development is kind of weird. It means that several questions on my
final exam (given to my students Thursday and yesterday) are probably flawed
now.

additional content that didn't arrive in time to be included in the
current print issue.

From a layman's point of view all the article says to me is the old
Sci-Fi shibboleth about "Silicon based life forms" isn't so far out of
the realm of possibility as the critics once claimed, i.e. that there
are other chemical processes that can be "life" beyond those we are
commonly familiar with.

For me, the only real surprise is that these guys managed to get funding
for their research in the current anti-Science climate that prevails
here in the U.S.

There's relatively little information out there right now. I'm a bit skeptical
of the findings until I see something published in a reputable journal. It's
not unusual to find bacteria (Archaea) living in some pretty atrocious

Heard that on NPR this morning.

Did they sequence the DNA and actually identify arsenic in the locales
where phosphorus should be?

The story on the radio said some scientists criticize the findings
because they did not completely eliminate all phosphorus from the sample
and cannot positively say whether the bacterium uses arsenic in place of
phosphorus or is just highly adapted to the high level of arsenic found
in its "natural" environment.
