Just last weekend, I shot a show with the K10D fixed at ISO 1250 (the edge of
usability) and speeds of 1/10-1/40. 1/500 is a shutter speed I've only ever
gotten on nice BIG stages. Nice, but unusual/atypical!

Got and read the book. I like the pictures in it and I appreciate the tips
and advice on how to access the venue, manage the shooting and the like.
What I find odd is that all pictures show conditions of very bright stage
lighting, allowing shutter speeds around 1/250-1/500 f/2.8 @ ISO 1600.
That's possible and very welcome, but also rather unusual in most concert
shooting, where 1/30-1/60 f/2.8 ISO 3200 is the average exposure condition,
while other situations require even slower shutter speeds or higher ISO
settings at f/2.8.

I'd like to see how the author manages such conditions.

Just doing some research and stumbled across this book about concert
photography, I know some of you enjoy it but ask occasionally about
lighting etc

I would probably have bought the book, then arrived at the same
conclusion - which explains why I'm always broke!

OT - concert photography

2010-02-23 Thread Igor Roshchin

Thanks, Cotty!

I just got it from the library yesterday (it came through
interlibrary loan from Arizona - Interlibrary loans rule!).

There are many fascinating shots in that book!
Those of famous and not so famous musicians.
My non-photography friends were also fascinated to see this book.

I envied the photographer for those shots, as well as for how many
concerts he got to go to.

The author gives brief suggestions about some important features
that are important for photographing musical performers/performances.
Those suggestions are illustrated by great photos.
While some of those hints were obvious to me (I've been using them
intuitively), it was nice to see some others formulated and illustrated
with examples.

It's a short enjoyable reading (you can read it all probably in an hour),
but it makes a great "coffee table book".
Since I don't usually collect that type of books, I enjoyed borrowing
it from the library. But it's a good gift - I would prefer it
over many other coffee table books.

HTH,

Igor

When I looked it up, only the one star reviews showed. From your link

The Amazon reviews I just saw were mixed, as opposed to very poor, with
some liking it and some hating it:

David Bowie was insisting on limits of this sort back in his Ziggy era which
preceded his "Thin White Duke" era. I doubt it'd be easy to determine just
which superstar was first on the scene.

BTW, I always thought the 3 song limit came from Blondie, her makeup
would start to run after about the third song, so she imposed this
limit. I just read this blog post that says it originated with Springsteen

Started long before Springsteen, probably even predates the Beatles &
the "British Invasion".

Likely an invention of "Colonel Tom Parker", if it didn't predate him.
