I did finally learn something of value: the restaurant on the 6th

Re: OT "I just don't think I `get' art"

2013-10-15 Thread Larry Colen
One effect that I notice over and over is what I call the "educated palate".
Actually, a lot of other people do too.

I've heard "smooth jazz" also referred to as "white wine jazz". It's
something that is easily accessible, you don't have to study a lot
about the subject to "get" it, and its an introduction to a field that
goes much much deeper. And, there are a lot of people that once they've
learned more about a subject, and developed a taste for things that they
never would have liked when they started out, they realize that they
no longer like the very thing that led them down that path in the first
place.

I've found that my tastes can be educated, but often only so much.
I've gotten past the point of enjoying smooth jazz, but a lot of the
avant garde stuff still sounds to me, as a friend described jazz,
like two radios tuned to different stations.

One of the beauties of the PDML, is that many of us are in that
wonderful place where we can laugh at both the over done HDR, and the
people that'll look for five minutes at a snapshot of someone sitting
in a chair in a field.

One of my favorite definitions is that an intellectual is someone
who has been educated beyond their intelligence. It has been my
impression that a lot of artists have gone right past an educated
palate to an intellectual one.

I agree complete (and I do know something about quantum mechanically :-).

People don't study art for 5 years at universities to come back understanding
nothing new. What i don't understand is why many demand that art should be
easily understandable (and booring), and why they so much want to be call
themselves artistist. It seldom make their pictures any better. More often it
make them worse.

He doesn't discriminate, because by his own admission he doesn't know how to.
He attacks an obvious and easy target without saying anything useful. It's
lazy, boring, unoriginal and entirely without redeeming wit.

You can read exactly this sort of 'naked Emperor' crap all the way back to at
least the mid-19th century, and probably beyond, from people who don't get it,
and decide to play to the gallery instead.

It's perfectly OK not to 'get' Art - it's a difficult subject, and it takes
effort. I don't understand quantum physics, but if I wrote a blog mocking the
people who practise it, and those who make an effort to understand it, I'd be a

When there's something I don't get, which many other intelligent people
obviously do, then instead of retreating into the small-minded ignorance of the
Daily Mail reader or Fox News viewer I try to figure it out.

If I've made a fair effort, as this chap claims to have done, and I still don't
get it, then I reconcile myself to my own ignorance rather than flinging
insults at it, and at them, like a gibbon flinging shit through the bars of its

The very process of trying to understand difficult things can be its own
