Re: OT Tourist RailRoads

2008-01-08 Thread David J Brooks
Yes those areas would be great on a train. Its sad we here, only have
a 1/2 dozen or so tours like that. From the TV show, it looks like 3
times that or more are available in the US.

I would'nt mind those Canadian west ones, but not sure if the CFO
would join. If not i guess i'd have to drive out myself then.:-)

Yes, I watched the show, loved it, and have some of the episodes on VHS.

Some of my best travel experiences have been on trains. My favorites
include The Rocky Mountaineer, from Vancouver to Banff and Calgary,
The Glacier Express, from St Moritz to Zermatt, and the Crystal
Panorama, from Montreaux to Interlaken. All quite wonderful.

Take a look at http://www.ebtrr.com/ We were there a couple of years
ago and really didn't get to do much poking around, as Christie was
pregnant at the time. But we did take a ride. Their functioning steam
engine was undergoing repairs, so they had a diesel pulling us. At the
far end of the trip everyone got off the train at a little park for
lunch. I guess there's a loop just past the park, because they turned
the train around and picked us up.

Anyway, lots of photo ops. It would be really cool to take some photos
inside the round house with a handful of wireless flashes.

Re: OT Tourist RailRoads

2008-01-07 Thread Bob Sullivan
Dave,
I can't find the program on my public TV stations, but I'd like to
travel some of those lines.
It would make a great PDML outing in different parts of the country.
Until I can find the program, let us know what you find out on trips.
Maybe we can coordinate something...
Regards, Bob S.

OT Tourist RailRoads

2008-01-07 Thread David J Brooks
I took a break from the NFL yesterday, around 3pm i think it was(not a
real fan of three down football anyway) and stumbled
upon a two hour show on PBS hosted by the "Great Scenic Railway Journey" people.

I like trains, and i know a lot do here as well, so this is probably a
moot thing, but i watch the whole
two hours.

Man was that a great show. Some lovely old trains and scenery. They
started in the New York/NH area and went all around the USA, east
coast, deserts and west coast, and finished up in the Yukon. Nice
narration and history of the rr beds.

I think i'm going to put some of those trips on the vacation list.

We have *some* scenic train trips here, but only a few.

Thought i'd share.

Now, back to the book writing.:-)
