On Google maps and Lightroom

2018-12-21 Thread Jostein
Following up on Ralf's lament, I tried to find out exactly what Google
has changed.

As it turns out, the queries in Lightroom code still goes to the right
place, but Google has introduced a pricing model for access to the data.
Access is only granted to paying developers. Which means that in Adobe's
subscription-based licensing model, the running cost of accessing Google
Maps can be incorporated in the monthly fee.

A traditional one-off payment for the software does not cope well with
this new pay-as-you-go sceme from Google.

I think the only chance one has to amend this, is if a capable developer
figures out how to set up a proxy service on the local computer that can
intercept the query from Lightroom to Google and then modify it to
either fulfil Google's new demands, or to pass the query on to another
map service all together like Bing, for example.

Bottom line,

Adobe is not alone in screwing its customers over. :-(
